- Description
- Series Description
- "For the past ten years, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) has been building a unique, round-the-clock news and information broadcast service for the citizens of Minnesota and surrounding states. Delivered by satellite to a growing network of public radio stations, MPR's News and Information service is [a] remarkable mix of local, regional, national and international news sources. Within reach of half of the state's population, it is a significant public service using all the tools available to radio. The service provides listeners with quality information -- enabling them to make more informed decisions -- and to be better participants in the democratic process. On the local and regional level, MPR employs a News & Information staff of over 60 reporters, producers, anchors, based at MPR's production headquarters in St. Paul and at the network stations serving our region (map and staff list attached). In addition to extensive daily news coverage, MPR has made a significant commitment to coverage of issues [affecting] the communities we serve. Three special news teams cover rural issues, public policy matters and social issues. To facilitate news production on all levels, MPR uses a newsroom computer system that links our entire news team and our portable satellite uplink takes listeners to remote broadcast sites throughout our region. On a national level, Minnesota Public Radio taps programming from American Public Radio, National Public Radio, AP and Reuters -- some of the strongest and most respected news sources in the country. Listeners also benefit daily from international news sources of the BBC and CBC. MPR's news and information service plugs listeners into news events as they happen, and provides critical perspectives and analysis that connect the listeners to the issues of the day."--1990 Peabody Awards entry form.
