Description
Series Description
"Marking the fourth year of a unique collaborative effort between WTTW/Channel 11 and The Chicago Community Trust, CHICAGO MATTERS 1993 looks at the subject of racism through a series of organizations and society. The three programs in the series all examine the more subtle and elusive racist policies and practices that persist within society, in order to recognize and overcome such injustices. THE COST OF RAICSM Every year the Federal Housing Administration pays out billions of dollars to cover bad loans. When loans fail, black homeowners are most directly affected, and black neighborhoods are hardest hit. This program reveals the high price all Chicagoans pay for racist policies which have led to lost jobs, and eroded tax base, increased social spending and damaged infrastructure. MARQUETTE PARK: NOT JUST BLACK AND WHITE Over the past 25 years, Marquette Park has been a racial battleground in Chicago. Although some still resist change and refuse to live on the same block with a different race, this program attempts to encourage dialogue about racism and race relations across and beyond people's comfortable circles. COMBATTING RACISM - WHERE TO BEGIN This 90-minute live public affairs special presents a lively dialogue between an in-studio audience and viewer call-ins."-- 1993 Peabody Awards entry form.
