Description
Episode Description
"Julie Harris stars in THE LAST OF MRS. LINCOLN, a two-hour drama by James Prideaux which reveals little known facts of American history. Mary Todd Lincoln's story is a fascinating study in character, though at time a tragic one. In the seventeen years following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, his widow struggled to repay debts that had been incurred during the Presidency; she faced the death of one son and estrangement from the other. After the trauma of having sat next to her husband while he was murdered, Mrs. Lincoln fell from fame to notoriety. She was slandered by former friends, misunderstood by Washington society. For a time she lived abroad. Mary Lincoln was a woman who inspired strong emotions from both her admirers and her detractors and it was in her evocation of this complex and brilliant woman that Julie Harris gives a performance which ranks as one of the great achievements of her career. "George Schaefer directed for Executive Producer Norman Lloyd and other prominent roles are played by Michael Cristofer, Robby Benson, Priscilla Morrill and Ford Rainey. "The play was produced at KCET for the Public Broadcasting Service."--1976 Peabody Awards entry form.
