This compilation includes excerpts of performances by Michael Murphey, Steve Goodman, John Prine, The Texas Playboys, Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, John Hartford, Jesse Winchester, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Doc Watson, Killough & Eckley, Asleep at the Wheel, and The Dillards.
Series Description
"On the surface what will be seen and heard is a music concert featuring Michael Murphey, typical of his live performances. What this concert represents better any other in the AUSTIN CITY LIMITS series is a diversity of music forms that have emerged as a new sound, proliferated in Austin, Texas, and spread with epidemic characteristics throughout the United States and beyond. "It has been called 'Progressive Country,' the "Austin Sound,' and "Redneck Rock,' but probably best described by Austin singer-songwriter Steve Fromholz as 'free form country folk-rock science fiction gospel gum existential bluegrass guacamole opera music.' "At the end of this season there will be 49 hours of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS programs. Michael Murphey represents them well, touching on folk, gospel, bluegrass, country, country rock, and popular music. "The involvement of the audience in this program is typical of the Austin music scene. Each concert is a happening and each audience responds in its own way but always in some way integral to the performance and to the overall effect on the home viewing audience. The home viewer is included in the experience rather than being a passive onlooker. "In an attached letter, ethnomusicologist Archie Green pretty well explains why we think this unique set of program elements merits PEABODY consideration. "In addition to the Michael Murphey program, we are including two [ten-minute] samplers of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS series in order to give you a more complete view of the scope of the series."--1978 Peabody Awards entry form.
