- Description
- Series Description
- "The theme of ''Talking with David Frost' (TWDF) is 'leaders in their field' and in 1992 the PBS series moved strongly into the political arena with two separate long-form interviews with all three presidential candidates, as well as with the main vice presidential candidates and Pat Buchanan. Four days before the election, Mr. Frost sat down with George Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot in the last broadcast anywhere with all three candidates in one program. The Wall Street Journal said 'the conversations with David Frost showed the (political) process at its clearest.' Through side-by-side interviews, David Frost flushed out the renowned strengths and shortcomings of each. Bush was curiously relaxed, at ease, almost carefree given the uphill battle that stood before him. He bemoaned the ugliness of the campaign and dismissed Iraqgate; curiously, he was almost dismissive of his own 'kinder and gentler' philosophy. Bill Clinton was thoughtful, well-paced and extraordinarily quick with facts. Ross Perot was alternatively defensive and combative, crying foul at Republican dirty tricks. The meatiness of his answers and repartee were impressive. The interview with John Gielgud, the quintessential Shakespearean actor, illustrates the range and diversity of TWDF. Gielgud, 78, took a long, [retrospective] view of his life, regrets, personal shortcomings and fears. He walked the viewers through the intersecting world of theatre and movies, recalling the jealousies between himself and Laurence Olivier and friendships with Marlon Brando, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor."-- 1992 Peabody Awards entry form.
