- Description
- Series Description
- "SALSA blends education and entertainment to introduce young children to Spanish language and culture. The series leverages youngsters' unique capacity for language learning while capturing their rapt attention with a lively blend of storytelling, puppetry, animation, music, and live action. Spanish language is progressively developed during the series and seamlessly integrated into the context. Each program emphasizes 2-3 vocabulary words, used [in context] within story segments and highlighted through animation and live action features. Words are repeated in subsequent programs, often in new ways. Selected programs designed as quiz shows provide opportunity for review. Although SALSA is entirely in Spanish to maximize its educational effectiveness, the series readily appeals to its predominantly non-Spanish-speaking audience. Familiar tales such as 'The Three Billy Goats,' updated with generous dashes of humor, provide a basis for the story lines. Recognizable characters, settings and plots, along with careful visualizations, ensure that the Spanish is clear and easy to follow. Elements of Hispanic culture are liberally sprinkled throughout the series, including music, foods, customs, and glimpses into the lives of children in a variety of Hispanic countries. SALSA can be used effectively even when teachers, parents, and others are not experienced in Spanish. A comprehensive website and a printed activity guide with an extensive range and selection of active learning experiences supplement the program. SALSA was designed by a panel of experts in early childhood education and foreign language instruction and addresses national foreign language standards."--1998 Peabody Awards entry form.
