Description
Episode Description
"Whether the location is a nightclub, outdoor concert hall or studio, WTTW's music series SOUNDSTAGE has always allowed performers to do what they do best: perform before a live audience. "Over its ten year history, SOUNDSTAGE has showcased almost everyone who is anyone in the fields of pop, jazz, rock, folk, country and bluegrass. This two-hour special, with host Dionne Warwick, celebrates these musicians by presenting, in chronological order, segments from over seventy of the series' 109 programs. "Among other highlights, the program features Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea in their rendition of 'Someday My Prince Will Come' (the occasion also being the first time the two musicians sat down together at the piano), 'Rainy Day Woman' from Waylon Jennings, 'China Grove' from the Doobie Brothers, and 'Seven Come Eleven,' performed by Benny Goodman. "In other clips, Ella Fitzgerald scat sings to Count Basie's piano on 'One O'clock Jump,' then chuckles, 'They never heard the theme song this way!' The Rev. Al Green tosses roses to his audience after 'I Feel Good!,' Tina Turner hypnotizes in 'Proud Mary,' and in an affecting finale, Harry Chapin sings that 'All My Life's A Circle.' "WTTW considers that SOUNDSTAGE merits Peabody consideration because of several landmarks it has achieved: the first television series to be recorded and broadcast in stereo, the first to be simulcast with FM radio stations, one of a handful of music series broadcast on television, one of the few that took chances on such unknowns as Barry Manilow, The Pointer Sisters and Al Jarreau, and one of the very few that has allowed the musician to perform in his own way beyond the brief 'guest shots' of most musical variety programs."--1985 Peabody Awards entry form.
