Description
Episode Description
A man introduces the story and the historical context it was written in. The story begins with the woman talking about the house and her room. She addresses her speech to the camera. She talks about how she hates the wallpaper, going into great detail of everything she hates about it. Her husband brings her medicine and tells her to sleep. Two weeks later, she expresses her loneliness and her frustration with her nervous condition. She cannot be with her baby because it makes her nervous. Her husband refuses to change the wallpaper, and she is beginning to break down as it angers her more and more. She begins to see figures in the paper and grows paranoid. Her husband lectures her that she is the only one who can help herself, but her condition continues to worsen, and she continues to obsess over the wallpaper pattern. She sees a woman behind the pattern who creeps around the room at night, and she starts to see women creeping out the window. She begins to believe that she is the woman behind the wallpaper, and she tears the wallpaper and the room apart.
Series Description
"'The Yellow Wallpaper' is a dramatic adaptation of a short story written in the year 1893 by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The first person narrative is delivered by the central character, a woman who is gradually going insane. She becomes obsessed by the wallpaper in the room where she is supposed to be taking a rest cure for her nerves. Daily her attention is given over to the patterns in the wallpaper until she begins to fantasize a woman behind the paper 'creeping, creeping.' Her mental deterioration becomes complete when she exchanges personalities with the imagined woman. "'The Yellow Wallpaper' is the first production in the series The Short Story designed to encourage wide leisure reading among junior and senior high school students."--1979 Peabody Awards entry form.
