Description
Episode Description
"The program took a look at the effect of illicit and prescription drugs and alcohol on people in the workforce--which in turn [affects] everyone in one way or another. The first piece is an overview focusing on the fact that whether people use drugs or alcohol on or off the job, there is still a negative effect as far as work performance is concerned. Drug use jeopardizes the safety of co-workers and increases costs to the company and to American taxpayers. The second and third pieces look at the problem of substance abuse in the white and blue-collar workforces respectively. White-collar workers are more heavily involved in cocaine use and many large paychecks are going to drugs. In the blue-collar workforce, we looked at General Motors, one of the big problems is that they use heavy machinery. The risk of the employee injuring himself or his co-workers [is] greatly increased, and the ultimate result could be an injury to a person who purchases a carelessly-made defective product. The fourth piece is an 'On the Record' interview with Dr. Carlton Turner, the Special Assistant to the President for Drug Abuse Policy. He talks about the government's view of the problem of substance abuse. The next segment is a visual breakdown of costs and other statistics associated with the problem of substance abuse. The fifth piece is the regular 'Perspective' segment, in which one of our ten noted economists comments on an economic topic of concern. In this case, Adam Smith talks about foreign debt. The sixth piece is a look at employee assistance programs set up by companies to deal with drug-using employees and to help them kick the habit."--1984 Peabody Awards entry form.
