Description
Program Description
"This special five and one-half hour radio drama/documentary highlights the radio career of the Peabody award-winning writer, producer and director, William N. Robson. The special program, narrated by Robson and WAMU-FM's John Hickman, traces the outstanding career of Mr. Robson over a period of forty-one years 'from the early 1930's to his present work as a producer with the Voice of America. Many important programs in the history of broadcast are heard, among them, Robson's WPA documentary about the Great Depression, 'No Help Wanted'; the famous Columbia Workshop broadcast of Archibald MacLeish's 'Fall of the City' with Orson Welles and Burgees of Meredith; his complete Peabody-award winning programs, 'The Open Letter on Race Hatred'; the eloquent Robson statement, 'Freedom--A Definition'; and the highly acclaimed production of 'Three Skeleton Key' starring Vincent Price, as it was broadcast on the CBS series, Escape. The program actually parallels the rapid growth of radio broadcasting in America, showing its 'Golden Age' of the 1940s, and its ultimate decline with the growth of television in the 1950s. Virtually the biggest names in the entertainment business are represented throughout the program; Al Jolson, Maurice Chevalier, Eddie Cantor, Robert Young, William Conrad and many others. The development of the radio documentary is established, as well as the first radio series based on actual police cases. The program was written, produced and directed by host John Hickman and William N. Robson, and has been deposited in the National Archives of the United States as an outstanding example of the Golden Age of Radio Broadcasting."--1974 Peabody Awards entry form.
