- Description
- Program Description
- "For nearly four decades, public television station Thirteen/WNET New York has been dedicated to the idea that television can be a consistently positive force in people's lives. Through its international, national and local productions, its regional broadcasts, educational outreach, and new media projects, Thirteen has used the power of television to teach, to inspire, to celebrate our cultural riches, to explore the natural world, to open discussion of important issues, to give voice to underserved segments of the population, and generally to create viewing experiences characterized by depth, substance and lasting significance. In the course of pursuing its public service mission, Thirteen has made definitive contributions to the history of the television medium. With such enduring series as GREAT PERFORMANCES, NATURE, AMERICAN MASTERS and THE MACNEIL/LEHRER NEWSHOUR, Thirteen has pioneered entirely new television genres. From HERITAGE: CIVILIZATION AND THE JEWS and AMERICAN VISIONS to THE BRAIN and THE MIND, Thirteen's major, multi-part documentaries in the sciences and humanities have continually transformed the television set into a site of in-depth study. Thirteen's outreach campaigns regularly carry the educational power of its productions beyond the screen and directly into schools, universities, prisons, and community organizations. A local broadcaster and not-for-profit institution deeply involved in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut metropolitan area, Thirteen reaches millions of viewers each week with its own national and local productions, as well as with the best non-commercial programming from around the world. Thirteen's unique educational projects are helping teachers do their jobs better by showing them how to use linear and interactive media as classroom tools. And, as the convergence of media accelerates, Thirteen is applying the advanced capabilities of digital television to serve more people in a greater variety of ways. In its many roles, Thirteen has left a legacy of innovation and uncompromising quality by wielding the power of television in the interest of individuals, community and the nation."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
