- Description
- Program Description
- "'Chuck Kraemer Shoots Himself (Not in the Foot)' is a collection of pieces produced, written, reported, shot and edited by Chuck Kraemer. These stories and commentaries aired on either WGBH, Channel 2, or WCVB, Channel 5 in Boston. On Channel 2, Boston's PBS station, the pieces all ran on 'Greater Boston,' a new daily magazine program. On Channel 5, Boston's ABC affiliate, they ran on the early news. "Each of these eight pieces was shot by Kraemer on the new Digital Video (DV) format, with a small camera costing only $3500, then transferred to Beta SP for editing. Nothing here duplicates material in previous Peabody entries by Kraemer. These stories were all produced and aired in 1997. "After 22 years as a regular employee of WCVB, Boston's ABC affiliate, Kraemer has added public television to his workload and resorted to an arduous, quasi-freelance, one-man-band kind of professional life to gain independence from the tight shoot schedules and drastically abbreviated running times of typical news stories these days. He is also discouraged by the shrill tone of most television news, with its emphasis on violence and celebrity. He thinks normalcy is more interesting than deviancy or fame, and more dramatic, even, if only young hang around long enough to gather, and ponder, its rich particulars. Working alone allows him to hang around long enough."--1997 Peabody Awards entry form. The segments are as follows: In the first, Chuck Kraemer discusses how to move on with life after a child leaves for college. The second looks at the rituals surrounding small town homecoming football games. The third looks at Kraemer's morning routine with the daily newspaper and the potential for digital newspapers. The fourth is an interview with writer David McCullough about the importance of his typewriter in the writing process. The fifth is an interview with sculptor Justin Gordon about his art practice and how he got started with sculpting. The sixth is a reflection on finding time for leisure and rest in the busy world of the Information age. The seventh is an interview with Marilyn Clarke, a carillonneur in Gloucester about her artistic practice. The eighth is a discussion of Norman Rockwell's art and legacy.
