"'The campaign was so tepid that television seemed to tune out, the network evening newscasts cutting their (election-related) airtime by as much as 40 percent' ---American Journalism Review. "By contrast, public television's Nightly Business Report never 'tuned out.' Leaving coverage of the 'horse race' and scandals to others, it focused instead on the election issues that were really on voters' minds'such as: 'What is happening to the American economy, wages and the workforce in the new global economy'' "In two outstanding series of reports, '96: An Economic Choice,' and 'Paychecks and Politics.' NBR zeroed in on these concerns and how the various candidates addressed them. "Between January and October, Correspondent Dennis Moore and Washington Bureau Chief Darren Gersh didn't just follow the candidates around the country. They also went into the factories, the supermarkets and the luncheonettes to find out what had changed since 1992, when the Clinton campaign's focus on 'it's the economy, stupid' proved so successful. The insights they picked up from ordinary Americans beyond the beltway put them ahead of many political pundits and economic analysts."--1996 Peabody Awards entry form.
