Description
Program Description
"For a brief 100 days in the spring of 1984, over 200 art masterpieces from 60 of America's leading art institutions were brought together at Miami's Center For the Fine Arts to create not only a visual feast, but [also] a veritable chronicle of the history of world art and of American museum collections. 'In Quest of Excellence' documents that remarkable art exhibition. "Our host for this hour-long art excursion is Jan van der Marck, the director of Miami's Center For The Fine Arts, who spent over 3 years arranging and assembling this once-in-a-lifetime display. His intimate knowledge of the history surrounding each item enables him to provide the viewer with unique insights and perspectives on the progress of art, as well as interesting anecdotes about the individual pieces, their creators, and their collectors. Stretching from the primitive renderings of early man to the extremely lifelike sculptures of contemporary artists George Segal and Duane Hanson, ['In Quest of Excellence'] encompasses art from all ages and cultures, sampling the full scope of America's museums. "Featuring the stunning masterworks of the exhibition, the show explores such subjects as the brilliance of the Dutch masters and how they influenced the later Spanish artist Goya; why Delacroix and the European Romantic artists differed from the American Romantics; the 'radical' art of the Impressionists and its further transformation by Van Gogh and [Gauguin]; the Cubist and Surrealist artists that led the way to the 'combine' paintings of Robert Rauschenberg; and many other unexpected relationships that comprise the history of art. Special guests art historian Paula Harper and sculptor Duane Hanson provide additional insights and revelations. "Produced by Penelope McPhee and directed by Angel Hernandez, 'In Quest of Excellence' is a celebration of the best of American collections, and a stimulating visual journey through the history of art."--1984 Peabody Awards entry form.
