- Episode Description
- This broadcast of Read to Me is the reading of a section of Chessmen of Doom by John Bellaris. The reading begins where the prior broadcast left off in Chapter 9 as Johnny was putting the pieces together about Professor Childermass, the Stone Arabia Mansion, and the evil Mr. Stallybrass. Johnny and his best pal Fergie plot to listen in on a conversation between the professor and his friend Dr. Cootes. They discover that Professor Childermass and Dr. Cootes are planning to go to Stone Arabia to try and stop Mr. Stallybrass. Johnny and Fergie plan to also go to Stone Arabia to assist the professor. Months pass, but the time finally comes for their mysterious adventure. Johnny and Fergie board the train and arrive in Stone Arabia sleepy and groggy. When they go to get a taxi to take them to the mansion, only one is waiting at the station and someone is already sitting in the back seat. They enter the car and there sits Mr. Stallybrass. He performs magic on them, so they are mute and under his control. They drive to a church where they are ushered down into the burial vault under the church. A lantern is lit revealing their location as well as two open caskets which contain Professor Childermass and Dr. Cootes who have been given a sleeping potion. The reading concludes Mr. Stallybrass alluding to the evil plan he will commence that evening.
- Series Description
- The power of words. Their capacity to describe, to draw pictures in your mind, to excite your imagination. Words linked with radio's ability to distribute spoken information to large audiences over great physical areas make a powerful combination. This combination has allowed Maine Public Radio to bring to our audience the richness of young people's literature through the series, READ TO ME. READ TO ME is broadcast weeknights at 7:30 p.m. The median age of our audience is ten years old. Our books are made available free of charge and are reviewed and read in their entirety by a cadre of dedicated volunteers who donate their spare time to draw verbal pictures for our young listeners. These dedicated readers are ministers, librarians, housewives, educators, military personnel, business persons. They travel from across the state to bring their own special magic to the words from fine books. All of us, the publishers and authors, readers and co-producers of READ TO ME, have one thing in common: we love words. We love their power to relay thoughts, transmit ideas, relate knowledge. Our listeners share our feelings for words. They allow us into their homes. They humble us with thanks for 'bringing back family dinner-hour.' They tell us that they sit around their living rooms listening with 'ears open and hearts entwined'. READ TO ME is supported by over 980 of the state's public, private and school libraries who are provided broadcast book lists and bookmarks to publicize the series. READ TO ME is recorded by classroom teachers and used to supplement their reading programs. READ TO ME program information is provided to the basic education centers across the state so that the series may be used as an aid in teaching basic reading skills. In a state whose number of functionally illiterate citizens hovers between one quarter and one third of its population, encouraging reading is imperative. READ TO ME is designed to touch our audience, to relate the beauty and power of words and books, to encourage them to read. "The written words and the spoken word come together on READ TO ME and give validity to the concept that different mediums can work in harmonious concert to carry the message to our listeners that reading is wonderful."-- 1992 Peabody Awards entry form.
