- "LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman live on the South Side of Chicago. Lloyd lives in the Ida B. Wells Housing Development; LeAlan lives just a few blocks away. In March, 1993 these two young men were given tape recorders and asked to keep an audio diary of their lives. For one week LeAlan and Lloyd recorded everything'going to school, hanging out in the streets, taking adventures together. They interviewed their families and friends; told the stories of their lives into the microphones while lying in bed late at night. The boys named their documentary 'Ghetto Life 101'. "'Ghetto Life 101' is a poignant hour portrait of two children growing up in poverty'the enormous obstacles they face, their boundless strength and resiliency. The voices of these young men are haunting, their stories both painful and profound. 'Ghetto Life 101' is a testament to the tremendous potential of young people residing in impoverished communities across this nation. "Following its broadcast on All Things Considered, 'Ghetto Life 101' received nearly 1,000 tape and transcript orders'making it one of the most requested programs in public radio's history. The day after the NPR broadcast, the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote: 'Have you ever been driving in your car and become so engrossed by something on the radio that you'll sit in the car long after you've arrived at your destination? That happened to me yesterday with 'Ghetto Life 101''. It was remarkable'' "'Ghetto Life 101' is the first-ever 'radio-diary'-style documentary produced for public radio -- where ordinary people are given tape recorders and asked to chronicle their lives."1993 Peabody Awards entry form.
