Description
Episode Description
"VAUDEVILLE is a celebration of the most popular live entertainment form in American history and the artists who invigorated the medium, presented through archive film clips of both famous and forgotten vaudeville acts, the reminiscences of thirty former vaudevillians, and the insights of modern entertainers and writers, including actor/directors Robert Townsend and Bill Irwin, and lifelong vaudeville fan Studs Terkel. "Although vaudeville was 'the loam of this century's performing life' (New Yorker theater critic John Lahr), the medium had been ignored by its artistic descendants. Surprisingly, VAUDEVILLE is the first major television documentary on the subject, and given their ages, undoubtedly the last to feature recent interviews with some of the 25,000 vaudeville performers who made it possible for our ancestors to escape their often dull and difficult lives, if only for a few hours. And when they did escape they saw representations of themselves, and their neighbors, and they learned about each other. Vaudeville was indeed America on stage. "We believe VAUDEVILLE merits Peabody consideration for three reasons: Great American artists finally receive the praise and recognition they deserve, especially artists of color including Bert Williams, the Nicholas Brothers and Ming & Toy; A period of revolutionary change in America (1880-1930) is examined through a unique and entertaining perspective; And finally, to quote one review, 'the'program instantly takes its place among the most vital documents in the history of show biz''"--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
