- Episode Description
- This is Episode Five, "Cultivating Literacy."
- Series Description
- "This series merits Peabody consideration because it examines our world of literacy and education in a critical manner that covers many seldom discussed aspects of literacy. Concerned citizens anywhere in the U.S. might ask similar questions about the positive and negative roles literacy plays in personal power, technology, education, and communities. "The series asks what is done with reading, for example, after the basic skills are taught. Do people read information, seek entertainment, or explore ideas? What is the power relationship between an author and a reader, between TV and viewer, or between two people speaking' "Native Americans and ethnic groups have spoken about shortcomings they see in our present concepts of literacy and education--and they are important elements of this series. The series goes back through history and traces our communication roots to oral history and illustrates how things have changed up to the present. The series was aimed at creating greater awareness of the fundamental issues behind education and literacy in hopes of raising constructive public discussion that can strengthen communities and help individuals deal with the flood of images and symbols covering us from many directions. "The series has aired in major cities such as New York, San Francisco, Portland, Columbus and Pittsburgh. It has also aired in places like Kenosha, WI, Arcata, CA, and Wrangell, AK. A discussion guide was also prepared for listener, programmers, teachers, and policy makers. (A copy is enclosed.) Distribution is continuing beyond the couple of dozen cities it originally aired in. The series is an unusual thought-provoking look at the world of literacy most of us accept without question."--1988 Peabody Awards entry form.
