Description
Series Description
This series is based on course materials from the Meteorological Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It covers the major aspects of meteorology related to the every day experience of the listener. It offers a well-rounded body of knowledge on the ways of the weather and the latest methods of forecasting and weather analysis. Some programs were devoted to instruction in the building of home weather stations and listeners were invited to write for plans and reading lists. Participants were from the Meteorology Department of M.I.T."--1948 Peabody Digest. This episode covers how weathermen solve the problem of taking measurements high above the Earth, featuring Delmar P. Kiely and Henry B. Caine from MIT. They use kites, airplanes, and unmanned balloons in order to take measurements. Caine goes over the drawbacks of the use of balloons, both manned and unmanned, the types of kites used and how they were used, and the advantages of airplanes in taking upper-air measurements. Caine also discusses why balloons have come back into use and the qualities required for instruments used to take upper air measurements.
