Description
Program Description
WTTW presents prima ballerina Suzanne Farrell and the Chicago City Ballet in two new works by choreographer Paul Mejia: Eight by Adler and The Seasons. Arranged by Richard Adler from his Broadway shows Pajama Game and Damn Yankees, Eight by Adler is a show stopping, sexy interpretation of such hits as 'You Gotta Have Heart,' 'Hernando's Hideaway' and 'Whatever Lola Wants.' Farrell, partnered by several of the male dancers from the Chicago City Ballet, displays an instinct for jazz as well as the clarity and poise she is so celebrated for as principal ballerina with the New York City Ballet. Clive Barnes of The New York Times has said of Miss Farrell, 'she is the embodiment of music.' "Composer Alexandre Glazounow's score The Seasons is given a rich, romantic interpretation by Mejia. The ballet is presented as four tableaux depicting the character of the four seasons of the year. A shimmering curtain provides the backdrop as the season changes from icy winter to spring garlands, from spirited summer to vibrant autumn. Founded in 1980 by Maria Tallchief, who has been universally recognized as America's first great prima ballerina, the Chicago City Ballet has recently completed its first European tour. "'Thrillingly inventive' is what the Chicago Sun-Times has to say about the choreography of The Seasons. Richard Christiansen, of the Chicago Tribune, describes the Chicago City Ballet as ''a first class sparkling company that does honor to Chicago.' "WTTW has entered CHICAGO CITY BALLET AT THE RIALTO in the Peabody Awards because it believes the program to be a rare example of modern as well as classical dance on television."--1985 Peabody Awards entry form.
