"Although women have made enormous strides toward equality, they are still valued primarily on the basis of how they look. These values are reflected in microcosm by a children's beauty pageant. "Monday's Child follows a group of little girls who enter a local pageant. The first half of the documentary sets the stage, introducing us to the contestants and their families. At the finals in Sacramento, the children compete in beauty and talent. Along with their smiles, all the girls wear cosmetics, voluminous curls and frilly dresses as they vie for eight-foot trophies, sashes and glittery crowns. The excitement and hysteria of winning and losing intensifies the importance of the pageant to the families involved. The heartbreak of the losing contestants emphasizes the cruelty of our culture"s preoccupation with female attractiveness. "Monday"s Child merits Peabody consideration because it offers a fresh and entertaining look at a problem with profound implications for our society.
