Program Description
"Last year, KPBS stepped in to help San Diego teachers improve the state of science education by creating a project that can prove a model for all cities across the nation. The station developed KPBS Seek Out Science, a major educational outreach project designed to stimulate excitement and knowledge about science while encouraging interest in scientific careers, primarily among middle and junior high school female students and students of color. This is done through the following: offering teachers a comprehensive educational curriculum developed in conjunction with the National Public Radio science programs, 'Oceans of Life? and 'Life on the Brink'; and hands on labs, field trips and scientific lectures"--excerpt from 1996 Peabody Awards entry form. The promotional video shows various middle school students participating in scientific experiments. For example, two Afro-American girls talk about a project with food groups, then another discusses electricity.
