Series Description
"SOUNDSTAGE has been generally acknowledged in both TV and musical circles to be the only program on television that treats popular music of all types as something more than the most superficial of entertainments. To that end, extreme care is given to the selection of themes and artists that will reflect high musical and historical values, while also providing a high quota of pure entertainment. "Technically, SOUNDSTAGE is state-of-the-art; it is recorded on a 24-track recorder, guaranteeing the highest fidelity stereo sound possible. SOUNDSTAGE is stereo simulcast over PBS nationwide. "Our target audience is 18-34, but the 'series of specials' concept upon which the program is founded, and the broad range of styles and categories allowed under the umbrella term 'popular MUSIC , have contributed to the acceptance of many programs in the series by viewers of all ages and musical interests. SOUNDSTAGE's estimated weekly audience is between three and five million people. "SOUNDSTAGE has brought TV audiences musical performances by artists with as wide-ranging and varied backgrounds as Benny Goodman, Bob Dylan, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Barry Manilow, Dizzy Gillespie, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, The Pointer Sisters and Chick Corea. The series ranges from jazz to rock to pop, from bluegrass to bebop to B-flat blues. In a very real, musical way, SOUNDSTAGE is a living archive of contemporary music. "The program submitted for Peabody consideration is 'Ella' -- a comprehensive review of the musical career of Ella Fitzgerald."--1979 Peabody Awards entry form.
