<v WTTW Speaker>Tonight from Chicago, Soundstage celebrates its fifth anniversary with a look back at the past five years of popular music. [Various songs being played] <v WTTW Speaker>Here's your host, Harry Chapin. <v Harry Chapin>Hi. That opening gives you an idea of what you'll be seeing tonight. And I'm happy to be here to guide you through the past five years of Soundstage. This almost empty place is studio A here at WTTW in Chicago. And this is where the sixty-six Soundstage shows have been taped. Used to seeing the studio filled with performers and an audience. And you will again, as we go through many of the highlights of the past five years. Let's start with one of the most dynamic shows from the first year, the Pointer Sisters doing "Yes, we can can". It's August 28, 1974 and it's hot. <v The Pointer Sisters>[Song: Yes, We Can Can by the Pointer Sisters]
<v Harry Chapin>Two other exciting shows from the first year of Soundstage starred José Feliciano and Don McLean doing American Pie.
<v José Feliciano>[Song: Light My Fire by Jose Feliciano] <v Don McLean>[Song: American Pie by Don McLean] <v Harry Chapin>On October 8, 1974, Jackie Wilson appeared on Soundstage. This turned out to be his last major television appearance. A few months later, he suffered a stroke and is still confined to bed. We'd prefer to remember him as one of the most exciting performers ever. <v Jackie Wilson>[Song: Lonely Teardrops by Jackie Wilson]
<v Harry Chapin>It was August 13th, 1974, when I taped the third soundstage show. <v Harry Chapin>[Song: Book of Chapin by Harry Chapin] When I came from college just the other day, so much like a man, I just had to say, son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for awhile? He shook his head and he said with a smile what I'd really like Dad is to borrow the car keys. <v Harry Chapin>See you later. Can I have them please? And the cat's in the cradle with a silver spoon, little boy blue and the man on the moon. When you coming home son? I don't know when, but we'll get together, then dad we're gonna have a good time then. Well, I've long since retired. My sons moved away, I called him up just the other day. I said I'd like to see you if you don't mind. You said I'd love to dad if I can find the time.
<v Harry Chapin>You see, my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu, but it's sure nice talking to you, Dad. It's been sure nice talking to you. As I hung up the phone. It occurred to me he'd grown up just like me. My boy was just like me. And the cat's in the cradle with a silver spoon. Little boy blue and the man on the moon. When you coming home son I don't know when, but we'll get together then dad. You know, we'll have a good time then. <v Harry Chapin>[Piano song] That's Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. The first time they ever sat down together at a grand piano. [Duet is played] [Audience claps]
<v Harry Chapin>Two other performers during that first year were Tom T. Hall and Bonnie Raitt.
<v Tom T. Hall>[Song: The Year that Clayton Delaney Died by Tom T. Hall] [Audience claps] <v Bonnie Raitt>[Song: Women Be Wise by Bonnie Raitt] <v Harry Chapin>That first year also featured the music of Arlo Guthrie, and this lesson in Political Science from Randy Newman.
<v Randy Newman>[Song: Political Science by Randy Newman] [Audience claps]. <v Arlo Guthrie>[Song: City of New Orleans by Arlo Gurthrie]
<v Harry Chapin>We'll end our look at the first year's soundstage with the first show itself. Here's Dr. John, Johnny Winter, Buddy Miles, Mike Bloomfield, Rollow Radford, Junior Wells, Willie Dixon and Koko Taylor paying tribute to the star of the first show Muddy Waters. [Song: Blue's Summit]
<v Harry Chapin>That was quite a first year for Soundstage. We'll begin the second year highlights with three songs I think you'll enjoy.
<v Harry Chapin>First Three Dog Night doing Joy to the World. Then we'll have Janis Ian sing her composition "At Seventeen". And we'll end with Dion and Phil Everly doing a song written exclusively for Soundstage by Dion. It's called The Queen of '59. <v Three Dog Night>[Song: Joy to the World by Three Dog Night] <v Janis Ian>[Song: At Seventeen by Janis Ian]
<v Dion DiMucci and Phil Everly>In the Queen of 1959 is happy trying to be a dedicated mother, and a wife, and a friend to me. And she sure looks good to me, she's my everything. She treats me like a king. She's my lady. Ooolala, ooolala, lala, lala <v Harry Chapin>This piece of tape is really something. John Hammond suggested that Benny Goodman, George Benson be paired up doing Benny's Seven, Come Eleven. Not only was this before George had become a star. Benny had never even heard of it. Later Benny asked George to record it. They're joined here by Joe Jones, Milt Hinton, Teddy Wilson and Red Norvo. [Jazz music - Seven, Come Eleven is played]
<v Harry Chapin>July 28th, 1975. Barry Manilow's first television special.
<v Barry Manilow>[Song: Studio Musician by Barry Manilow] <v Barry Manilow>Think I should end it myself, I think I should just take the piano thing off. It's nice.
<v Harry Chapin>Three other exciting shows from the second year starred Blood, Sweat & Tears, Waylon Jennings and Anne Murray. <v Blood, Sweat & Tears>[Song: And When I Die by Blood, Sweat and Tears] <v Waylon Jennings>[Song: Rainy Day Woman by Waylon Jennings]
<v Anne Murray>[Song: Danny's Song by Anne Murray] <v Harry Chapin>Here's a look at a Soundstage classic, 60 Minutes to Kill with Martin Mull. <v Martin Mull>I'm only as good as the woman I'm with. And if she's a devil well I'll find her level I'm flexible, I'm flexible, I'm only as smart as the woman I'm with. And if she's a deuce, I'm stupid at once, I'm flexible. I'm flexible. I'm only as deft as the people hanging around me. I was nothing at all, I stepped out in the hall, and the beautiful people found me. Now, I'm beautiful too. I do just what they do. I used to be plastique and now I'm elastic. I'm flexible, I'm flexible. <v Martin Mull>Break it down.
<v Harry Chapin>This is our first downbeat jazz award show. And what a lineup. Chick Corea, George Benson, Stanley Clarke, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Airto, Rashan Roland Kirk, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Bill Watkins, Leonard White and Quincy Jones take the A-Train. [Jazz and piano plays] <v Harry Chapin>And this is Tom Waits.
<v Tom Waits>[Song: San Diego Serenade by Tom Waits] <v Harry Chapin>What can you say about Judy Collins? <v Judy Collins>[Song: Send in the Clowns by Judy Collins] <v Harry Chapin>During the third year taping of Soundstage, the studio was filled with scores of performers and thousands of Chicagoans cheering them on. The people here at WTTW tell me that two of the warmest, most sincere performers to appear that year were Melissa Manchester and her group and B.B. King and his band. I think you'll see why.
<v Melissa Manchester>[Song: Party Music by Melissa Manchester] <v B.B King>[Song: Let the Good Times Roll performed by B.B. King]. [Song goes instrumental]
<v Harry Chapin>[Violin playing] Who else but Soundstage would have thought of putting together a trio like this? Itzhak Perlman, Jean-Luc Ponty and Doug Kershaw. ["Fiddler's Three" being played]
<v Harry Chapin>One of the true gentlemen of jazz, Dizzy Gillespie and his bebop reunion. [Jazz music plays] <v Dizzy Gillespie>Peanuts, oh peanuts. Peanuts, oh peanuts. So peanuts, so peanuts.
<v Harry Chapin>The 11th show of the third season Santana. <v Santana>[Song: Dance Sister Dance by Santana] <v Harry Chapin>One of the great country bands appeared that year. This is Charlie Daniels doing the Orange Blossom special. [Country music plays]
<v Harry Chapin>To begin its fourth season, Soundstage left this studio and went to Red Rocks Coliseum, a beautiful spot outside of Denver. Ten thousand people were there cheering on Kenny Loggins. <v Kenny Loggins>[Song: Vahevala by Kenny Loggins] <v Harry Chapin>Here's Hank Williams Jr. doing one of his daddy's hits. And after that, we'll see a reunion of the Guess Who with Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, we'll follow that Phoebe Snow and David Bromberg.
<v Hank Williams Jr>[Song: Jambalaya (On the Bayou) by Hank Williams] <v Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman>[Song: Laughing by Guess Who (Performed by Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman)]
<v Phoebe Snow and David Cromberg>[Song: Hit the Road Jack performed by David Cromberg and Phoebe Snow]. <v Phoebe Snow>Get out of here, I love you. <v Harry Chapin>Here's Al Green, in one of his hits. <v Al Green>I say ?I felt fire ?inaudible? I ?inaudible? Make me feel fire, the fire, the fire, fire. ?inaudible? Oh yeah, yeah, whoa yeah. [Music continues without much vocals] [Piano sounds] <v Harry Chapin>Musicians musician Dave Brubeck and his sons Darius, Chris and Dan. [Piano sounds combined with drums].
<v Harry Chapin>Here's David Amram and his friends Dizzy Gillespie, Jeff Roburns, Steve Goodman and others. David calls this type of music ?citified? Bluegrass or crabgrass. [Music plays] <v David Amram>There was a harp named Alfred he lives up on a hill, his fiance is in another hill has another harp named Bill. Alfred tried to hold out through suffering the pair. All through the south hill, you can hear him ?harp that way? Oh my darling, please come back to me. Oink, oink, [pig noises] Alfred's a hog. Alfred's a hog.
<v Patti LaBelle>Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?- <v Harry Chapin>This, of course, is the sensational Patti LaBelle. And we'll close the fourth year with Peter Allen in I go to Rio. <v Patti LaBelle>[Song: Lady Marmalade by Labelle (Sang by Patti LaBelle)] <v Peter Allen>[Song: I go to Rio by Peter Allen] <v Harry Chapin>That, too, was a very good year. But then so is the current season of Soundstage. Leo Sayer, Emmylou Harris, Ry Cooder, Dr. Hook, Bruce Roberts with Alice Cooper and Bernie Taupin. Let's start our brief look of the 5th year lineup with two very popular groups, Pablo Cruise and Journey.
<v Pablo Cruise>[Song: Worlds Away by Pablo Cruise] <v Journey>Yeah, everybody. Everybody, yeah, yeah. Everybody. You smile now you hear me? Everybody ooh. ?inaudible? Such a cute little lady, you right there, you over there ooh ?inaudible? [Song continues without vocals] <v Ry Cooder>Big Bad Bill is Sweet-.

[Guitars being played, audience claps] <v Harry Chapin>We'll end the highlights of the fifth season with the first show starring Leo Sayer.
<v Leo Sayer>[Song: Long Tall Glasses by Leo Sayer] [Song ends] <v Harry Chapin>I hope you've enjoyed this past hour looking at the 5 years of Soundstage. I'm proud to been on the series and I'm pleased to have been your guide tonight. Good night.
<v Harry Chapin>All my life's a circle, sunrise and sundown. Moon rolls through the night time till the daybreak comes around. All my life's a circle, but I can't tell you why. This season's spinnin round again just keep rolling by. It seems like I've been here before. I sure remember when Hannah got this funny feeling that we'll all get together again. There's no straight lines make up my life and all my words have bends. There's no clear cut beginnings, so far, no dead ends. <v Harry Chapin>I've found you a thousand times. Guess you've done the same then we lose each other. It's just like a children's game, and as I see you here again. The thought runs through my mind, our love is like a circle. Let's go around one more time.
