- Program Description
- "After the shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado, the Colorado Public Radio news staff thought even with all the stories and details reported about what had happened, we still didn't have a deep understanding of what it meant to a kid who went through it. "News Director Kelley Griffin and All Things Considered Host Dan Drayer decided the best way to get at this story was to shed traditional reporting techniques and instead let a teenager tell her own story in her own time. They gave a tape recorder to Columbine student Kim Blair, who saw her best friend shot and paralyzed, and whose twin sister witnessed the gruesome scene in the library where most of the killings occurred. "Colorado Public Radio asked Kim to record everything she could in the weeks following the shooting ? from late night sleeplessness to a Friday night date. Griffin, Drayer and Audio Production Engineer Leslie Gaston edited 20 hours of her tape to present a 15-minute audio diary that demonstrated the toll this tragedy has taken on Kim and her friends and family, and also her surprising resiliency. "Producing the diary took weeks of intensive editing and production ? far more time than a typical story. But Colorado Public Radio recognized the potential impact the diary could have on our listeners and our community. In fact, one media critic said 'Numerous voices have described the horrific events that occurred at Columbine High School. Now, 17-year-old Kim Blair adds her perspective in the form of a compelling, often-wrenching audio diary'Blair is speaking from the heart.'"--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
