- Description
- Program Description
- "Nearly 350,000 listeners tune in to WGBH Radio each week, giving the station one of the largest weekly audiences of any public radio station in the United States. A 100,000-watt station broadcasting at 89.7 (mhz) within a radius of more than 50 miles, WGBH Radio has won a loyal following in Greater Boston by its commitment to non-commercial programming that reflects the diverse needs, tastes and backgrounds of its audience. Locally, WGBH's program fare covers all the bases, offering a provocative mix of music--classical, jazz and improvisation, acoustic blues and Broadway. Live broadcasts are the station's forte. From WGBH's studios, music festivals and concert stages around the region and the world, listeners enjoy performances from locally to internationally reputed artists. Morning Pro Musica, Music America, Eric In The Evening, and Folk Heritage are among the programs credited with making WGBH Boston's favorite public radio station. Through its network affiliations with American Public Radio, Eastern Public Radio and National Public Radio, WGBH is a major supplier of programs heard across the country. In addition to a wide array of traditionally-distributed productions, which include the family drama series The Web: Young People's Radio Theatre, and the performance special Late Night Radio: Tom Rush and Friends, WGBH Radio's reach extends across national borders. The Salzburg Festival, The Prague Spring Festival and the annual New Year's Day Vienna Philharmonic Concert have established WGBH's reputation as a leader in organizing American relays of international broadcasts. WGBH Radio, a leader in state-of-the-art broadcasts, has been a pioneer in experiments with digital recording and transmission to produce cleaner, more live-sounding presentations."--1985 Peabody Awards entry form.
