Program Description
"THE TIME OF OUR LIVES explores the conflict between the time in our bodies and the time on our wrists; between biological time and social time. Like other species we have evolved biological clocks. We march to nature's beat. But we have broken step, fashioned a 24-hour society, colonized the night, leap-frogged over time zones. And there have been serious consequences. Major disasters like Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and the Exxon Valdez oil spill all happened when human alertness levels are [at] a biological low point. Shift work causes health problems. Jet lag is widespread. In many ways we seem to be out of sync with the environment we evolved in. This program documents scientific efforts to create a new harmony in our lives by understanding what really makes us tick. "We believe it merits Peabody consideration because of its ability - at a time when standards of scientific literacy are low - to convey complex scientific information in an unusually engaging and entertaining manner.
