Description
Episode Description
There is discrimination against black servicemen both on and off US military bases overseas, this month's "Black Journal" program concludes. Filmed on location in Vietnam, black servicemen are interviewed in mess halls, USO clubs, on a riverboat in Upper Saigon, and aboard a helicopter. Also interviewed are several high Pentagon officials. One black serviceman testifies, "We had soul music (on the base) a couple of nights and they said they didn't dig it - so they put me on restriction for disobeying orders and refusing to stop dancing. It's the same off base. You go up in Saigon; down those streets you ain't welcome at all and they let you know it. Let a white man walk there, he's welcome - but just like the world - Georgia, Alabama, even New York, you get some places where you can't go. They bring you over here - you know it's gonna be hard when you get back." There is even discrimination in front-line combat units. "I've seen a bunch of black guys, a whole bund of them out there. I don't know why they are out there. I go up there, I'll see about 40 men, half of them black. I don't know why the Army does that. I don't think it's right," says a soldier. And if the black soldier comes home to more discrimination, what then? One say, "If I got back and they tried to treat me like this, I'll pick up a weapon and I'll go down with them even in the world - I shoot pretty good - they taught most of us how to shoot his weapon pretty good." Black Journal #22 is a National Educational Television production. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
Series Description
Black Journal began as a monthly series produced for, about, and - to a large extent - by black Americans, which used the magazine format to report on relevant issues to black Americans. Starting with the October 5, 1071 broadcast, the show switched to a half-hour weekly format that focused on one issue per week, with a brief segment on black news called "Grapevine." Beginning in 1973, the series changed back into a hour long show and experimented with various formats, including a call-in portion. From its initial broadcast on June 12, 1968 through November 7, 1972, Black Journal was produced under the National Educational Television name. Starting on November 14, 1972, the series was produced solely by WNET/13. Only the episodes produced under the NET name are included in the NET Collection. For the first part of Black Journal, episodes are numbered sequential spanning broadcast seasons. After the 1971-72 season, which ended with episode #68, the series started using season specific episode numbers, beginning with #301. The 1972-73 season spans #301 - 332, and then the 1973-74 season starts with #401. This new numbering pattern continues through the end of the series.
