moose ways move the pipe funding for this program has been provided by the station and
other public television stations and by grants from exxon corporation allied chemical corporation and the corporation for public broadcasting from tehran interviews with a new prime minister made a buzz on them and with the influential deputy prime minister dr abraham me as the two key leaders of iran's revolutionary government will yeah at adkins meaning the new leaders of iran told a world today already feeling a shortage of iranian oil but they hope to have it flowing again in the near future prime minister made a buzzer down and deputy prime minister in britain yesterday so
this program had to be back to sixty percent of pre revolutionary production within two months our rapidly or was produced would depend on iran's economic needs and the willingness of customers to pay the right prize tonight the views of iran's new government you from an interview with prime minister bares argonne was conducted in his office in tehran by our reporter robert hersh an interpreter says enzi i was present to translate back and forth between english and persian retirees and we've edited out most of the parish the first question what is the most serious problem facing the new government we don't have any major problems with the primaries is like now would be in any provisional transitional government we don't have any specific problem at the time as a producer and transition team has there been friction between your government and the revolutionary committee of ayatollah khomeini for instance in the matter of executions which the revolutionary committee has ordered there's no
difference between us and the revolution console you're under the supervision of the revolution comes and before i became prime minister i was part of the revolution homs another problem would show prime minister and buzz about things that might exist that you see this difference is that there are committees the committee of the among the committee of the people were on strike and other committees which exist in revolutionary committee the thing is that many of the people who are working for these committees are volunteers who might not coordinate with the revolutionary committee the american democratic senator henry jackson has charged the soviet agents have infiltrated iran and are now actively creating disturbances can you confirm this as far as the government is concerned we don't know anything about this would be surprised if it were true i hadn't titled quite editing bobby at the establishment will be disappointed if this was true are you planning anything specific week to
prevent such intervention yes we are going to prevent it and the necessary action if this is true when former prime minister balked yard first was on there were reports that he was under your protection is that true of that and this is there's two and those job as advisers that the last time i was supposed to meet at the former prime minister wasn't yes he was supposed to meet him that they had the date that the high councils of the army announced its solidarity with the people and also he was supposed to meet is the last year as well as the chief of staff resigned that day you don't have any idea where humans do supported ayatollah khomeini's call today for a renewed effort to find one all of the us that initial more for practically table and the
one after the nation at the past oh yeah bozeman and just it was evans says that usually the ayatollah has to approve of what we do enough for me without me the government is now committed to beginning oil exports by next week it has been reported that you're aiming towards sixty percent of the past production levels is that about the correct and from the beginning off my government and announced that we are going to have or production and we are going to have already export and the reason why we were waiting is to appoint me director of an ioc yesterday i had a meeting with the national iranian oil companies after this election yesterday we had a meeting and we are going to resume oil production as soon as possible but about being gay at sixty percent or forty percent or an exact percentage
we're still not sure who are going to export as much as it would be necessary for our economy and one on when you expect to be able to reach your eventual goal whatever but i promise later this afternoon we talked by satellite with the uptick in revenue as dr close associate of the ayatollah khomeini and a key policymaker in the buzzer down government where he is deputy prime minister for revolutionary affairs honestly as are gone says that oil production will begin in a matter of a few days is that going to happen this year these are largely expect to beginners to the cia at what level with the production they compared what was able for where the criteria we need to satisfy our economic needs
what is that means in terms of the present new and the artist i couldn't turn to what the production was before the revolution when i can predict on beverages said the moment is to the memo that reaches satisfied or economical needs what are the problems that still have to be overcome in order to get production going again they knew not any major prominence in a matter of the administration as you know the head general manager of the year and in as your company and it has appointed was appointed a few days ago is a starter these are certain amount of today's army get into his sock what percentage of the oil workers do you expect not to go back to work i heard a weirdo figure year of fifteen percent but that jibe with what you are although
no really has seen any particular figure i was in i was a week ago i didn't see any noticeable resentment by the workers are they are going looking for it to go to their mortgages stuffed it works and they made any specific demands of your workers made any specific demands on you or the government saying look will go back to work if you will do something are certain certain kinds not as the servicer know why what what's the oil is back in production at a plant a sellout what mechanism new plan b when mandy is added detail as the other ants birds as sanders when it arrived they were denouncing what how much of this or do you anticipate going to the united states and the west were layered as you know the year idolize said that you sell or going to anyone who wanted to buy and sell on us the money and he wanted that means united states in the
west while everyone else that's right that's right as you probably know the key as he and the rest of the world outside of around there's been a lot of talk of syria's oil shortage is all kinds of cutbacks here in the united states and elsewhere as a result of these stop in the production of oil in iran what do you say to the rest of the world tonight in terms of what to expect in the future as far as an oil supply from around in general terms well as i say in their new celluloid to any customer who is willing to pay the proper prize for it and ate criteria for deferred action as our economic elaine's so lamb also managed to get the money that kind of the money the man and that he wanted and to use it in any way that you can have for national interest definitely would not spend any or oil money to buy the huge argument and
assisted on women orators then in a way that the old government had those jaws government are doing they're absolutely not that time is over you say economical need what are the economical mitterrand right now sir well man who we had me as you know a neon man confronted needed complete bankruptcy then complete the last asian of the agriculture in order to prove their economy in order and july july zurich and the concert we may be in for a near revenues that's what amy and finally on the question of oil do you ever expect an immediate future at least production will ever go back to what it was before the revolution as i said it's very hard to predict at the moment we didn't put any particle and they're you know predict in
part to remember one they say as the year prime minister was and i said today maybe fifty or sixty percent i like robin share our curiosity sometimes sitting here in the out in nine states looks a little confusing at the moment as to who is actually running your country is it a revolutionary committee headed by dr ayatollah or is it prime minister buzzer down well as you know we're in a transitional stage of evolution from the time of evolution to a time barely a provisional government was appointed definitely dairies and physician so what you can see what you mentioned as a cold fusion during this period is nothing bad embarrassing about sensation of evolutionary phase to the provisional government there is no differences between the government and the evolution or console ah the prime
minister said in the interview we just saying that that he operated under this a vision supervision oh the revolutionary council does that mean that the revolutionary council makes specific decisions which he carries out on what precisely where you say you know one of the islamic revolutionary council which as being that announced by the ayatollah and fuel and they go is to act as a provisional and the legislative office and he wasn't us government act as a provisional transitional government southern notion betraying the endeavor is not an evolutionary console and behead provisional government of vase a gun is between the nation between legislative office and the ad executives are saying that's what he meant by the drum is a provision the ayatollah has announced i believe that he will be going soon to go only religious city and in iran does that mean does
that mean that his influence and the revolutionary committee is about to wither away oh no not i thought you see that you are probably making it to his state been missing within two phenomena to head right things one is the islamic revolutionary cause of that i mentioned the other one is any of their numerous as long can it is was rare to spend ten years leading the law by to be banned during this evolution and these chameleons they will gradually disappear as too because their final show will be a dare they done killed a man in a series or biden you read the below the national guard willie ayatollah's influence diminish and really involve himself a lesson affairs if he goes away from tehran as they noted this this doesn't make any differences he was
in paris and he was in that have now is in iran that they're using on the wording of the shuttle it doesn't make any differences his interest is tremendous and everybody in all of mastery i mean do you accept him as artie long and there is no doubt about that i see how interim a prime minister is mr buzzard done could he could disappear after a referendum on a new constitution is in place not after the constitution as a new constitution is in place on either after the new election based on the upfronts an adopted new constitution and the new assembly's yes then the new government would be annexed and if there was a gun is pointed and again as a prime was a human is safe not illegal i say can you tell us the timetable for the referendum and the constitution and elections one is larry david gale then i would say it's an island beats
weeks before the referendum no knowledge maybe even <unk> be sooner sooner than leaps that's right and that what will the people be asked in that referendum to give their opinion and they weren't in the islamic republic were not or not on monarchy yes i say and then after that referendum they will be asked to vote on a new constitution that said the new constitution drafted and i've done the new constitution is ready and as a group of experts there is standing as soon as it has many including the print for me and nations and the apple one of the people i say we were left wing groups growing under the general title of the fed they be allowed to take part in the elections and then be eligible to be elected to the government yes that's true and they're going to have a democratic is society is they at math or the losses they wanted to react to find and
there they are free to express their opinion nothing to participate in dimension and they are not afraid is if you own a prison to be re elected by them i say and there and your latest our position on the army you have yourself been involved i gather in setting up the national guard they found it in the left wing want the old iranian army to be totally been replaced by the national guard is that your opinion well air one family wanted to do in the army it has to go gradually it cannot be done overnight rodriguez say is envious eyes of the army must be videos then the kind of the head criteria <unk> value system in the army unless we change at the main function of the army unless we change from supporting one individually to support a
secure the borders this will come gradually not there all of a sudden it has to do you know how and when former prime minister back yard out of the country i don't have any idea to know you know we're years now no i don't have any sleight is it your way many as another country or is at or out no i don't have any immediate still a possibility that it's in iran yes it is the ayatollah as you know and said that he thought he had left the country in the period that there's a possibility still there as our eye when it is more than other rumors one candidate said those rumors and of course you know that after you on how seriously are you upper there a serious man and there are documented and papers that during his prime or shimmy has directly commanded we had a shooting and some other things i asked him would be brought to that red red try me
personally ordered the murder of a known as a show he has ensured memorandum gaming and diet can rent an army is a must be brought to trial does that mean that he would probably be executed as the generals and others have been no i don't really do that is in the court of course at all the judge has thus far been for execution well you know no written about inadequate and yet by revolutionary trial court the regulated by has anybody been proven innocent and adjust innocent by one of the revolutionary courts yes there's a general or so who was who could you give me a certain example somebody with proper for revolutionary court trial and just as you know as you know that the head of the air force so that the year was inside and eight he was not executed i say but there's no question in your mind of a prime minister backyards ill health that correct when i
can say ah that i can say that he would be brought into its insight aren't there were reports today from tehran that that you are preparing a trial of the shawl and a big sports stadiums direct no sign the storm intensity of that was that was the point of my question that obviously the job would probably not returning iran voluntarily to stand trial how do you plan to get him to come back reverend dr vaz the ring and that's what's the best made that the kidnapping and the viewers as you have so i don't know i'm not i'm not a big growth through their plan for bad augmenting our bad days and london is someone to prisons and there that they are planning to bring him that i'm ever going to bring him back i don't really need are people in iran now planning to bring the shah back but otis williams and with it with a full ok of that of the
government and i am the council right and that it is not do it doesn't depend on the government because so in that the court said temporary or gray and so again an evolutionary cousin of evolution inside the airline has decided that one and so in mandate government is counting on the orders of the head and there was an aide said the party has is there any question in your mind that if by any means the shy has brought back around that a court would find him guilty and that he would be executed so i don't have any doubt several says prices are only crimes and they'd say isn't it possible that the trial would be held in the large sports stadium and he talked about that'll internally rating and i discuss seven minute out of our deadline it may only not read as anything at the moment art several generals and others have already been tried and
executed how many more trials and executions like that our arms are scheduled are there many people waiting trial the plan many more you do you do you expect many more executions to come about i don't know what do you know it may mean but as you know i'm a high ranking office says they have been the men involved in beer massacre is not only in tehran in a mercedes into his standing taboo reason shiraz i am a city you may lead a major dominant in their head of this odd da vinci's of their twenties they are they have a lovely one they're not there in this great massacre that they have collected all of the country so it's not say amount of one or two and there i would get a dozen law is not meant that they are not been in an executive or not i don't know that debate is on the court how many of you believe
would finally be tried before there's also a nod in terms of a purging the old regime in the military and elsewhere out and elsewhere in the old government how many people are we talking about how i was singing in a room a few minutes a bay barns or imagines an ounce you hand it's a view on our side by thank you roben true happy as they what kind of relations in a practical sense are you trying to achieve with the united states right now when they a youth united states government is willing to accept a new reality eat in your run ins and to respect the core iranian national interest and submit it to an evolution of something a situation then you have friendly nation use it as a missouri state you say if they are willing to do have gotten your mind still that the carter administration is willing to
accept that now you know that the policy making a big bean i say does not depend only one person a prime minister of a president carter that is the only a missionary went and they will change or not i cannot forget we have to see of course i know that the americans are among american government is among different than the first foreign powers agonizing that evolutionary gotten any new grant that however we have to wait and see if there is a genuine change in american foreign policy towards iran what world leaders i wouldn't be replacing ambassador zalman and tehran well it's not only changing and that you know his background of course says that would remind that bag it's not only changing any of them as either being undead they change helms and this day says solomon well been sanding and less
than a dozen dates and anything what we're asking around and looking for or what would be effective in any reading from friendly mission is going to change in the lack of one thousand joins us and how would you know that that has happened what most washington do to convince you that that has happened well we have to see what day you know in a process of that the a new development in iran at rutgers of action they would take are you can you spent several days last week escorting yasser out that the head of the plo around iran personally and there were various statements made during that both as he visited various centers including statements to the effect that iran would not help the plo in the fight against israel what kind of hell would iran the new government gives the plo would you send troops to fight israel no i don't think
so because there there we would give the support of a palestinian there are present people support any operas so oppressed people we would fight in your purse or so the measure need to innovate is based on the fact that they are impressed and at the moment it is it is our design is our little prayers are so they were at some point of piano and pretty funny anymore anyway i care about i don't think the military is sending in troops they don't need at one would you give them arms and financial support i don't think they need any one of them i say i'm the arab israelis and egyptians are currently holding another round of talks towards a peace treaty between them well your new government do anything to prevent egypt and israel achieving a peace agreement no
layering our hair and the moment he and completely occupied when there are men in china's situation barrett we are not worried about what eric andre gregory mone are common and they wanted to make it when i'm a kid because we know that he cannot be effectively to not be successful in that it's as if you don't have your dad they're making you yourself have been quoted in the last few days as saying that some countries in the middle east a part from around for instance egypt where right for an islamic revolution like the one that has just taken place our actively would your government support for instance islamic revolution in egypt went ahead that in egypt or anywhere else but it is at the event room as made demolition huge and not imported evolution so if they wanted to change their government as their decision army can do is when they start there and given them more support and as we got the support of the us than
many countries during artist ida only moral support that site for dr yasser has identified to identify from the egyptian they have to find their own bed sydell and they have shared their own destiny dark realities like you for joining us the signature lottery revenues because the grounds deputy prime minister speaking a few hours ago from taranto's offer might imagine what about tomorrow night speaking greek send one dollar to then mcneil lehrer or fox report by the us the oil one one on the macneil lehrer report was produced by wnet wpa they are solely responsible for its content funding for this program has been provided by the station and other public television stations and by transferring exelon corporation allied chemical

Description
Episode Description
Only a short time after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, a reporter interviews new Iranian Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan, who is heard through the voice of an interpreter. Then new Deputy Prime Minister Ibrahim Yazdi is interviewed in English. Both officials discuss their relationship to Imam Khomeini, as well as the status of resumption of oil exports, amid concerns about oil shortages. Yazdi explains the process of transition from the revolutionary phase to the provisional government, eventually to be replaced after a popular referendum. He expects open participation by all groups in a democracy, noting also that the army needs to change from supporting the deposed Shah to supporting the people. Yazdi is also asked about the fate of the Shah, former prime minister Bakhtiar and various other officials and more generally about what relationship Iran wants with the U. S. He responds that they seek a relationship of mutual respect and cooperation.
