"In the spirit of the SOAPBOX series, this program on teenagers in jail was designed to give 3 young people a chance to voice their thoughts and feelings about their current situation. On the program, Dr. Cottle interviews these inmates and attempts to reveal the circumstances surrounding each young man's crime, their personal backgrounds, their reactions to imprisonment, and their hopes and goals for the future. From their comments and behavior, we hoped to give the public a sense of the complexity of juvenile criminal behavior."We think this program merits Peabody consideration because it is a unique, unflinching look at teenage men in jail. The public seldom gets the opportunity to hear the story of the juvenile offender in his own words. 'Teenagers in Jail' provides this rare view of a teen's life behind bars."--1986 Peabody Awards entry form.
