Series Description
"AMERICAN JAZZ RADIO FESTIVAL presented five full concerts from the August 1990 Classical Jazz at Lincoln Center series. The opening broadcast in February, 1991, led with the news that jazz would become a constituent at Lincoln Center, a development that was certainly promoted by the success of these performances. "The content is unique and superb: traditional New Orleans music by young Louisiana musicians including director Michael White and Wynton Marsalis'international tenor artist Johnny Griffin opposite his peer Von Freeman, who has confined his career to Chicago without sacrificing growth restored Ellington charts from The Far East Suite and a cycle of short works motivated by the sounds and rhythm of train travel'a tribute to Jackie McLean, the post-Parker altoist whose distinctive tone, energy, and approach lit the hall, with performances of his music by small and medium-sized groups'a commissioned suite for vibraphonists Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson by the active octogenarian composer Benny Carter. Lincoln Center secured the rights and raised the funds, and an excellent engineer and remote facility donated services so that multi-track masters could be made. The mixed-down broadcast masters have been released solely through AJRF. "The radio team attempted to script and produce these concerts with attention to detail and grace of presentation. They are nearly complete documents. 125 NPR stations carried the series. AJRF has since evolved into a new series after seven continuous years of weekly performance programming. The 1990 Classical Jazz concerts served as AJRF's finest hours."--1991 Peabody Awards entry form.
