- Program Description
- "Thirty years ago when a handful of children from the sleepy town of Lyme Connecticut were identified with a mysterious form of arthritis it was not considered an important public health problem. But that has changed. Lyme Disease is more than arthritis, and it's not just in Connecticut. It's a national problem. It can be a serious and debilitating disease and the number of cases are increasing at alarming rates. In fact, according to public health officials, Lyme Disease cases have increased by 32- fold in the last fifteen years. The disease has been found in nearly all states as well as 18 other countries and is now considered one of the most important emergent diseases in the United States. "Lyme Disease is spread through the bite of an infected deer tick. If left untreated, Lyme Disease can result in a lifetime of debilitating pain and neurological damage. This program presents a comprehensive strategy for its prevention and control that can dramatically reduce the risk of infection. Narrated (gratis) by Academy Award-winning actress and mother Meryl Streep, the program reveals how the disease is spread and how to spot the symptoms. It also offers practical advice on how to find these tiny ticks, how to remove them properly, and how to keep deer ticks out of your yard. The special also introduces new innovative ways scientists are working to reduce the deer tick population. The special chronicles the stories of individuals of all ages who have suffered from Lyme Disease. Wolfie Blair, a young boy from Martha's Vineyard, recalls how he lost the ability to walk when, unbeknownst to him, Lyme Disease attacked his system. Lawyer, family man and avid golfer Frank Brown dismissed his tick bite when he didn't see a telltale bull's eye rash, but Lyme Disease soon devastated his health, his family and his work. Like most people with Lyme Disease, Sandra O'Neill was bitten by a deer tick in her own backyard and though she's been on antibiotics for two years and spent $100,000 in medical bills, her painful symptoms continue to return. More children get Lyme Disease than any other age group and the program offers important information and prevention strategies for parents and caretakers."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
