Greetings This is Christie the wordsmith. Recently on this series we've been investigating Evan Hammes words derived from the names of people. Last time we put King was Alyssa in the spotlight an ancient Persian ruler whose magnificent burial tomb gave us the eponym Maza Liam literally the shrine of muzzling. We remain in the ancient world for another tale of upon Amee starring the handsome Narcissus a young Greek of remarkable beauty. Narcissus was desired by all who saw him mortal women nymphs goddesses and Gods alike. The young man unmoved by pledges of love simply ignored those who would have his attention his rejected admirers asked the heavens for vengeance that the cold Narcissus would one day know the pain of unrequited love. And that request was heard and answered. After hunting in the forest one hot afternoon Narcissus knelt beside a clear pool to drink gazing back at him from the depths of the water was his own gorgeous face. The youth felt overwhelmingly in love with his own image. Unable to leave
the reflection in the pool Narcissus died from longing for his own beauty. This ancient story suggested the clinical term narcissism to nineteenth century psychologists introduced in 1909 narcissism refers to a personality disorder characterized by abnormal self admiration narcissism is a classic eponym or a word inspired by a name.
