Greetings last time on Christie the wordsmith we looked at several words that William Shakespeare either invented or printed for the first time in his plays. Words such as assassination quarrel some leap frog Froogle and alligator Shakespeare was not only responsible for introducing new words to the written record. He also crafted some gorgeous phrases still current in 21st century English. The expression at one fell swoop comes from the Bard's 16 0 6 tragedy Macbeth the time is ripe is a phrase uttered by the character worship Esther in Henry the Fourth Part One. The Prince of Denmark uses the expression in my mind's eye to refer to his imagination in Shakespeare's 16:00 play Hamlet. Through Lady Macbeth one of the playwrights most unforgettable female characters Shakespeare originated the expression the milk of human kindness. In the first act of the play Lady Macbeth wonders if her husband is strong enough to wear the crown. She frets that he lacks the cold hearted resolve to make the
difficult decisions that would ensure his success. Lady Macbeth says to her mate. Yet do I fear the nature it is too full of the milk of human kindness. This evocative expression coined by the Bard of Avon 400 years ago is still used by English speakers everywhere. I'm Christie the wordsmith. This program is recorded and produced in the studios of KGO AM in Bozeman Montana.
