Greetings and welcome to Christie the wordsmith from Montana State University in Bozeman. The original American dude was a 19th century dandy often accused of vanity and Fosbury. The dude was quote marked particularly by the extreme height of his round white cylinder of a collar the spoon shaped crown of his hard hat. The shortness of his fine overcoat and by such tightness of his trousers that no one could explain how he got his feet through them. That was writer Booth Tarkington verbal snapshot of the city dwelling dude of the late 1500s sons of prominent American families. These stylish young men often visited the Wild West where by the early 1900s dude ranches were established to accommodate them. The green and tender foot a dude was given a prominent role in the stories of Zane Grey. Mark Twain and Owen Wister stagecoach tourists were sometimes called doods and even wealthy adventurous some young women who travelled West were labelled du Deans as early as 1883. Though the derivation of
dude is inconclusive. Some suggest it comes from the Middle English dud. D u d a rag or an article of clothing. Or it might be a derivative of the dialectal German word Dieudonne cop meaning stupid head or fool no longer thought of as urban city slickers 21st century doods are skateboarders surfers rockers or just plain guys.
