Greetings and welcome to Christie the wordsmith the American Dialect Society consists of linguists etymologist from Marion's university students and independent scholars who in preparation for their annual meeting watch the American word scape for terms that rise to prominence. Then every January members of the American Dialect Society gather to vote for the word of the year. A term or phrase that best captures the discourse of the prior 12 months at a Baltimore meeting on January 8th 2010. The American Dialect Society voted for the word of the year for two thousand and nine. And the winner is tweet a short message sent via the Twitter dot com service and as a verb the act of sending such a message. There were other nominees for the American Dialect Society's word of the year but this one is not really a word. Rather it's what the American Dialect Society calls a vocabulary item. And this is easy are a suffix used in words such as birther or someone who questions whether President Obama was born in the United States
and death or someone who believes that the government has death panels in its health care reform plan. Another word of the year nominee was H1N1 which some pronounced Heinie and refers of course to the virus that causes swine flu. Next time on Christie the wordsmith the American Dialect Society S word most likely to succeed the most creative outrageous and euphemistic words and the one least likely to succeed for 2009.
