- Transcript
Welcome to the Montana Medicine Show. I'm Derrick strong. Sports Illustrated Dave McNally Montana's athlete of the century. Born in 1940 to the Billings baseball standout debuted with the Baltimore Orioles in 1962 southpaw McNally and Hall of Famer Jim Palmer formed one of baseball's greatest pitching rotations. McNally and the Orioles Dynasty played in four World Series between 1966 and 971 manager Earl Weaver called him an unbelievable competitor. He loved to set you up with a change. Fool you with that tremendous curve and then throw the fastball past you. McNally was a four time 20 game winner in one thousand sixty eight. He tied in American League pitching record with 17 straight wins earning the nickname Dave McLuckie. He remains the only pitcher in Major League history to hit a World Series grand slam. McNally once said the proudest thing I have left from those days is the respect of my teammates. They knew when I went out there I didn't leave anything on the bench. They got
everything I had to give. In 1975 McNally and Andy Messer Smith challenged baseball's reserve clause. They won a landmark victory establishing baseball's free agent era. The case led to multimillion dollar salaries and changed the face of pro sports. Upon retirement. McNally returned to Billings and started an auto dealership with his brother. He died of lung cancer in 2002. From K.J. L.T. studios. I'm Derek strong. Montana medicine show is supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
