Greetings and welcome to Christie the wordsmith. Alice grew bored and tired just sitting there on the riverbank with her older sister. She was nearly asleep when a white rabbit with pink eyes a waistcoat and a pocket watch ran across the meadow and disappeared into a hole. Curious Alice followed the rabbit into the hole. Quote never once considering how in the world she was to get out again in this opening sequence of Lewis Carroll's Alice's adventure in Wonderland Alice's disappearance down the rabbit hole drew her into a world of bizarre and improbable events shrinking and growing in size. Conversing with a caterpillar and playing croquet with a flamingo as a mallet. Lewis Carroll's beloved 865 classic inspired the expression down the rabbit hole referring to an adventure into the unknown an exciting one at best grotesque and dangerous at worst. English speakers have kept this phrase circulating over the decades. Journalist William Plummer in a July
1991 issue of People magazine wrote of the rabbit hole of cocaine addiction. Moviegoers were treated to this literary illusion with the 1999 release of The Matrix wherein the protagonist Neo was encouraged to go down the rabbit hole in his search for an alternate reality. With so many metaphorical rabbit holes in life the future of this evocative phrase seems assured. I'm Christie the wordsmith but Dave herbivores.
