Greetings I'm Christie Smith Christie the wordsmith from K.J. LTA fam in Bozeman Montana. At the first sign of a cold or perhaps with the onset of body aches or a malaise we often describe our disposition as under the weather. Never a serious or excruciating Lee painful condition. Feeling under the weather generally in disposes rather than debilitates the editors of The Oxford English Dictionary have traced the expression to a document dated 18 27 and though that was one of its first printed appearances it might have been in verbal circulation for some time prior to that year. Some etymological sources give the phrase under the weather a maritime origin asserting that the expression originally referred to seasickness passengers or sailors made ill by the pitching of a ship were said to be suffering under the influence of a gale or tempest or were simply under the weather. Other dictionaries don't associate this expression with seasickness at all. Instead they derive it from the notion that someone exposed to the elements might suffer a variety of maladies heat
stroke hypothermia sunburn Winburn etc. weather can also sour the mood as well as exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism. In this scenario someone indisposed by such difficulties is under the influence of the weather or just under the weather. I'm Christie the wordsmith from KGO AM at Montana State University in Bozeman. CHRISTIE The wordsmith is sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Zoot enterprises a high tech firm in Bozeman Montana offering challenging careers and innovative solutions for the financial services industry.
