Greetings verb of yours and welcome to Kristi the wordsmith. Lately we've been investigating eponym for the names of people and mythological characters that have become common words such as Atlas Stetson mentor and maverick. Today we'll look at the name of a literary figure that has loaned her name to our vocabulary Little Goody Two-Shoes Goody Two-Shoes was the nickname of a character featured in an 18th century nursery tale attributed to the English novelist all over Goldsmith. The heroine an innocent orphan was so poor that she had only one shoe to wear. When a clergyman adopted the little girl and gave her a matching pair of shoes the orphan was so overjoyed that she ran about the streets of her village pointing to her little feet and exclaiming to shoes to everyone she met. Little Goody Two-Shoes she was thereafter called went on to achieve fame wisdom and riches as a result of her virtue. Goody Two-Shoes came to refer to someone like
our orphan heroine optimistic grateful well-behaved and virtuous but lately the nickname has fallen on hard times. A Goody Two-Shoes is now someone we find annoyingly self-righteous. Next time a word inspired by the name of a New Testament prostitute. I'm Christie the wordsmith. The series is recorded at KGO all TFM on the campus of Montana State University in Bozeman. Fairly well verb of course. CHRISTIE The wordsmith is sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Zoot enterprises a high tech firm in Bozeman Montana offering challenging careers and innovative solutions for the financial services industry.
