Greetings This is Christie the wordsmith. The familiar aphorism. A rolling stone gathers no moss has an engaging life history from its Roman origins to its modern day American variations. A Roman actor and writer named Publilius Sirus originated the expression in the first century B.C. at the time of its coining and for many centuries thereafter a rolling stone gathers no moss meant wonders can never expect to amass wealth or a good reputation. By the 20th century an increasingly restless American society began to prize mobility striking out on one's own became an act of bravery and ambition rendering our Rollingstone proverb a bit conservative. In 1914 George Bernard Shaw wrote we keep repeating the silly phrase that a Rolling Stones gather no moss as if Moss were a desirable parasite. Some translated the expression as the sedentary becomes stale and mosque covered. This 2000 year old Latin proverb has had considerable influence on American popular
culture. In 1950 singer Muddy Waters recorded a blues number called Rolling Stone a title that in 1962 was adopted as a name by a certain British pop combo with Mick Jagger as its front man Bob Dylan's signature tune like a rolling stone was released on July 20th 1965. And in 1967 the music magazine Rolling Stone was first published in San Francisco. I'm Christie the wordsmith.
