Greetings and welcome to Christie the wordsmith. In 2009 American author editor and world watcher Paul Dixon published a compilation called Drunk the definitive drinkers dictionary a compendium of nearly 3000 English words synonymous with drunk. In his introduction writer Dixon claims that the English language includes more synonyms for drunk than for any other word. And in the definitive drinkers dictionary Dixon proves that statement on every page his alphabetize roster begins with a cup too much and concludes with Zazi old in-between we find such familiar synonyms as Joost lush stewed and royally plastered. There's also an assortment of in explicable synonyms that Dixon might have collected perhaps from personal conversations with bar patrons in the pulpit. Inky poo rotten as a chop and getting absolutely Moulin Rouge might fit in this category. Dixon devotes several pages to similes headed up with drunk as drunk as a
little red wagon. Forty billy goats a four dollar shotgun in Missouri and drunk as seven girls jumping fences. This last one Dixon notes is a term used by Margaret Mitchell in her novel Gone With The Wind. Dixon taps other literary notables for their drunk synonyms. Jack London uses jingled Ambrose Bierce calls it pious and Robert Burns personifies liquor itself as John Barleycorn.
