Greetings less time on Christie the wordsmith. We explore the word swashbuckler a term referring to a swaggering swordsman. The moniker is a blending of the term swash and making the sound of a swooshing sword and buckler an old French based word meaning small shield. The original swashbucklers were noisy bullies who challenged others by swashing or clanging their swords on their shields. Another marvelous word of the same genus is braggadocio a noun meaning an idle boast or a swagger braggadocio spelled biar a g g a DEO CIO sounds like an Italian word but it's not. It was invented by English poet and Shakespeare contemporary Edmund Spenser for his poem Fairy Queen published in fifty nine hundred six. The work a dense allegory features such characters as the personification of the One True Church and ARC Imago and evil sorcerer. The comic Knight of the epic is braggadocio who is
ridiculed throughout the poem for his boasting and sword rattling and his claims to amorous conquests. He's eventually exposed as a liar and a coward and has driven away with jeers and insults. Poet Edmund Spencer coined the name braggadocio from braggart Plus the Italian esque suffix OCI. Oh the poet's vainglorious Knight has achieved linguistic immortality throughout the centuries his name has become associated with excessive empty boasting.
