Greetings I'm Christie the wordsmith. The words Happy happen haphazard perhaps and happy less are all united by hap AJP a little term with all these etymological offspring. Modern English speakers don't use the word hap much anymore but in the 12 13 and 14 hundreds it was an important term meaning chance or fortune good or bad that b falls anyone early on happy meant fortunate or lucky. But by the sixteen hundreds the word changed to mean pleased glad or contented happen etymologically means to occur as fate would have it. The little term happy might be most easily detected in hath less meaning unfortunate or unlucky haps derived word happy has been put to a multiplicity of uses over the decades in the 1500s the adjective phrase Happy-Go-Lucky emerged to describe an easygoing person slaphappy showed up in the 1930s as a phrase to describe someone who is
dizzy or dazed from the notion that repeated slaps to the face will render someone giddy and light headed. A carefree careless or irresponsible person might also be called slap happy. The phrase Happy Hour emerged in 1961 to reinforce the notion of an early evening period of discount or two for drinks at the local bar.
