Greetings and welcome to Christie the wordsmith. Someone who is described as having feet of clay is often held in high regard but has an unexpected fault or failing the expression feet of clay is an allusion to the Old Testament Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar and a strange dream that troubled him one night a vision of an enormous dazzling statue came to Nebuchadnezzar its head appeared to be made of gold. Its chest and arms of silver and its belly and thought of bronze the legs were fashioned from iron while its feet were molded from iron and clay as never could never watched a rock hurtled from the sky and shattered the statues feet with no base on which to stand the enormous figure collapsed. Turn to dust and blew away with the wind. The Israelite a dream interpreter Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that he had had a vision of the future of Babylonia. Each layer of metal in descending order represented the rulership of a succeeding and more fragile Kingdom. The feet of the statue made from
an unstable metal and of iron and clay represented the weakest kingdom and was responsible for the demise of the statue which symbolized the great Babylonian Empire. The feet of clay in a dream have since become a metaphor for someone greatly admired but deeply flawed. Next time another foot expression from a classical source Achilles heel.
