A Montana State University in Bozeman this is Christie the wordsmith since 1990. The American Dialect Society a scholarly Association dedicated to the study of the English language in North America has been analyzing our national tongue for notable and prominent words at its annual meeting. The American Dialect Society selects the word of the year the word most likely to succeed the most creative outrageous and euphemistic words and the one least likely to succeed. In January of 2010 American Dialect Society's members gathered in Baltimore to discuss candidates for these lexical categories. The drama centered around the word of the Year for 2009 and that was a tweet a short message sent via the Twitter dot com service. But the American Dialect Society has fun with words and other categories as well. Take the winner of the most creative Word of the Year for 2009. Dracula sneeze covering the mouth with the crook of the elbow when sneezing seen as similar to popular portrayals of the vampire Dracula in
which he covers the lower half of his face with a cape. The most outrageous word of the Year for 2009 according to the American Dialect Society is death panel. A Suppose a panel of doctors and or bureaucrats who would decide which patients were allowed to receive treatment ostensibly leaving the rest to die. Join me next time on Kristi the wordsmith.
