Greetings and welcome to Christie the wordsmith. Last time on this series we examined the synonyms home and house. A pair of terms that English speakers frequently interchange. Yet in some contexts the word House suggests the physical structure used as a dwelling Well home connotes a familiar abode that provides comfort and refuge. Another pair of freely interchanged synonyms is horn and antler words for the bony projections that grow from the heads of certain animals. But who wears the horns and who the antlers. Well here in North America Atlas grow on elk deer moose and caribou atlases are branched structures that are shed and regrown annually and with the caribou as the exception are present only in males. The word at letter is a slurred pronunciation of the Latin term anti Ah-Q LARUS meaning positioned in front of the eye probably referring to the brow time which often protrudes from the center of the forehead over the eye of the animal. Horns on the other hand grow from the heads of such animals as byes and big horn sheep
and domestic cows. Curved pointed and and branched projections. Horns are borne by the males and often the females of the species. Horn derives from the word Cornu C.O. are an u. The Latin word for that phony projection Corno is also the source of the word unicorn meaning one horn and cornucopia. The horn of plenty.
