"As 1999 came to a close, the WKSU news staff took an in-depth look at a dozen issues influencing Cleveland, Akron, and Northeast Ohio during the 20th century. The 12-week series originally offered two parts to each story, a look back at the last 100 years and discussions on where the future could be headed, but many of the subjects provided so much material that additional segments were added, bringing the total number of pieces in the series to 32. "Although each topic in 'Our Society in the Next Century' includes enough information to stand alone as a worthwhile documentary, it is in the whole that the series truly shines. The depth of discussion of a range of topics that include everything from the history of the manufacturing industry that built the area to more recent concerns such as race relations and the environment, create a rich portrait of a region that was completely transformed in the 20th century and looks to the future with a tempered optimism. From the rise of steel and rubber, through the great depression and the loss of industrial jobs, to one of the fastest growing areas in the country with a rich ethnic heritage and strong arts and sports organizations, Northeast Ohio serves as a 'snapshot' of industrialized America."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
