Right Kind of. Person. And how important these. Nations now days and costs may seem a bit mature to be your typical college student. This is truly 74 years of age but he's by no means an oddity. Twenty thousand other students 16 years of age or older are living in a learning in colleges all across the United States and Canada this summer. Well this time actually I hope that this is even they are taking part in a national nonprofit educational program known as Elder hostile hostile usually brings to mind a modest overnight lodging for traveling young people. But in this case the idea is applied to people like Nathan Cox. Nathan and his wife Miriam live in Look Americans will think he's retired. When you factor. Into. Moving. Three years ago he and Marian heard about the elder hostels and they've been elder hostlers ever since. Oh yes now that we have experienced it we wouldn't miss it. We wouldn't we wouldn't. Do anything but try to get to different places. Now the idea of the elder hostel combining travelling hostel and learning began at the University of New Hampshire in 1975. Today there are older hostels at 360
institutions. Your organization has its headquarters in Boston Massachusetts. Last year Helen Hayes the queen of American theater did this public service announcement for them you know about you know the cusses are spending this their fifth elder hostel at Stockton State College here in New Jersey stockins the first school in New Jersey to host an elder hostel. The college offers to one week session for 45 students 60 years or older to add to their educations. It's quite a bargain too they get room board and tuition all for 130 dollars a week. And during that week elder hostel is like the classes live in college dorms eat cafeteria food and take classes taught by college faculty members. Nobody. Has worked stock in was the college's FIRST ELDER hostile session hostlers were offered the following three courses have attacked humans in their environment. Corrections in America and your consumer behavior public service is the first must turn from
Amsterdam New York from are you finding the intellectual content of the courses up to par or frankly are you getting bored sitting in a classroom. It's supposed to be. Said And while she really found the correction's course stimulating she found the others only so-so. Or would it make more sense to. Offer programs that would help. It can be applied when the people leave here and go back to their lives. I think that typically the kind of people who are attracted to well these are these are not the informality these are people who can travel and who are looking for a special opportunity. They are truly trying to get a college experience. They don't want to be treated as an older person they don't want to be seen as somebody with special needs except. To be interested in the older hostlers are extremely interested in what they are not only did we find them taking notes during class but they are also participating in many more questions than the typical 19 year old college student. I've experienced more and they are getting
a lot out of home. Learn not just to get a. Very tempting location just 10 miles away from the Atlantic City boardwalk but to try their hand at the gambling table. We were a little bit concerned that we might lose the class. That they would head towards Atlantic City immediately. And I'm very very pleased to say just from experience. I wasn't quite sure what was going to happen but from our experience now three days into the program. We have forty three people here and they seem to be doing the extracurricular traveling after class. We ask you Did you really quite frankly come here to get a cheap hotel rates so you can do a lot of gambling at the casino. You know five people doing that just taking advantage of lower rates. We haven't been planning to come tomorrow and the first international I can
find a quarter machine. We found out we found on one occasion. Last year where a couple One couple came to the college and never never came to any of the trigger this exactly as you're describing it as a low cost vacation for themselves in an area that was new to them. But that was exceptional an exceptional case. We have found that people have participated. And although you have the choice of taking one or three classes. We have found that most of them have taken the free. Yes. I know I know that I like it or not the editors there but. There are no responsibilities. What it does do is break the myth that all elderly people are sick and in nursing. To many people I believe feel that the elderly are infirm and that the elderly are in there so that the elderly are sitting at home alone that the elderly are looking for help at all. At all times.
This breaks the net. We know that i only about 5 percent of the elderly are ever see a nursing home. This is such good evidence. That people will make plans with travel will fly will come along and join with new people and that's got to make you think. That's got to stop you from thinking about all the nursing home beds it starts to make you think about what how much life is left. In a sense. To 60 65. You. The paintings are safe now locked.
