I think she was expecting soon. This. Will happen. And. It. Reeks. The. Budweiser Clydesdales. Symbols of a beer whose unique. Distinctive taste. Leads the way.
Will you go in this great land where you say but. Here. In. Atlanta after a fire at an AA Ocasio comes out of this corner and literally waving to somebody in the audience. That's how can I put it here. In the third round of this rematch between you and he had to be I in trouble before I am assured that scored well but the company seemed to have a look like Russia's candidate at 2:14 last June 10 when this youngster came out of nowhere to take a split decision. Fuck yeah. I guess. That's the ticket. Prominent. There were apparently right now right at the World Boxing Council. Yahoo is ranked number two I am a PC to a large degree. I am a pessimist I am a year ago
last June at 78 I am resulted from a an activity I am. Not into A and I think I am really expected better. Thank you except that I am writing and I am looking for a positive I am here an affair. I am happy where I am. It was. Additional layoffs in a school district that already faces the loss of more than 11 hundred workers along the trails had originally announced that as a pyrrhic Court decision delaying the layoff of eleven hundred would force the cut of 200 more employees. But the superintendent now says that austerity measures especially in the area of purchasing can
soften that blow. The trail's claims his plan would save about $600000 enough to forestall any immediate action on new layoffs but not enough to roll them out entirely. The layoff of those original 11 hundred will proceed as scheduled beginning next month. The Reverend Jesse Jackson will be in New York Monday officiating at funeral services for Norman Threadgill the local and the president who was killed in a head on collision Thursday night. The crash occurred in Irvington when Fred hill station wagon apparently went out of control crashing into a truck. It served as Newark and the president since 1976. With problems in public education popping up all over the state and jumping into the fray. Delegates from more than one third of the state's 600 Brunswick township to tackle problems in education. Such topics as marijuana. And the drinking age of 21. Leaders of the association believe.
That their actions will have an impact at the state level. We think that we have a very fine lobbying staff and I support staff. In fact our entire staff is often aimed at carrying out these resolutions we intend to carry out the intent of the delegates. Was the resolution in support of Newark an important move on the part of the body do you think. It certainly was an important resolution. We definitely have the North board. Appeared before the boards and submitted some information to them about the stance that they are taking the urban board's made a recommendation to this body through our board of directors. I was very pleased to see that this delegate Assembly passed that resolution with with great a great majority. I think what we are saying is that we realize the very tremendously difficult problems in Newark are a potential problem for any Board of Education in the state.
We had a slight break in the weather today along with the gray clouds of winter a bit of sunshine came through but that's the only sunshine we'll see for a while. Cloudy skies are expected tonight across much of the state as a chance of some light snow flurries in the upper Northwest. With light rain possible in the rest of the state temperatures will dip into the upper 20s to low 30s. Tomorrow more cloudiness with a 50 percent chance of light rain. Highs will be in the low to mid 30s in North Jersey. You know 40 in the southern part of the state. The outlook for Monday partly cloudy. Windy and cold. Call it country rock folk or swing Austin City Limits. This year it takes more of the country than ever before. It's authentic it's exciting it's

The Wildcats lead through the early goings and built up to a nine point edge on this Rory Sparrow bucket early in the second half. Darrell Strickland answered for Rutgers finally trust me Carol is going to score it made it 30 to 23 just about now come on Darrell Strickland had 13 points after it went to nine. Again Kelvin Troy hit from the corner. Strickland followed his own mis records within five thirty to twenty seven.
A three point play for Villanova and it was thirty five twenty seven Abdel Anderson hit give Tom Brown the Assessed thirty five twenty nine now with the score 37 30 still relatively early in the second half wreckers made its move a steal Anderson hits 37 32. Strickland from deep in the right corner 37 34. Villanova leads the eight with a six in one record. And our Dan Noonan talked with Rutgers coach Tom Young after the game.
You know how do you feel you finish in your conference. Well we still have two or three to get in the league and we've only played four ball games so we have a few left but at least we know right now we have a shot at the top if we lose today we don't. The Nets climbed to a game about 500 with the 110 want to win over New Orleans last night the game was played at Princeton's Jadwin Gym the first regular season pro game to be played at Jadwin six thousand one hundred thirty three attended far more than the nets usually drop Piscataway trivia buffs take note James Hardy and a while and rookie scored the first pro basketball at Jadwin. It was close throughout the first half Eric monies three point play in the final seconds of the half got the nets even at 59. Many in the crowd came out to see Pete Maravich the pistol hobbled with knee problems head on 10 of 19 and scored 25 points. Another player who attracted some attention was former Nick Spencer Haywood Spence had 19 rebounds but just 13 points on Iran this four of 17 from the field five of six from the line the next row led by John
Williams 25 suit came off the bench Eric money had 21 Eddie Jordan 18 so and that's won it with firepower from the back court. Now comes a murderous road trip. Eight games in 12 days. Also at Princeton at Jadwin Gym starting at 1 o'clock tomorrow the 14th annual St. high school indoor track relay Championships will be held and will be there. Sandy That's sports. Thank you Bill. There's a report that two young children ages 8 and 9 were responsible for setting the fire that killed 21 people in Hoboken. Officials are still not releasing any more information. But a newspaper The Jersey Journal today reported the police investigation of the children. And this morning funeral services were held for the last 17 victims of the
fire. All of them recent immigrants from Guyana. Phelps Hawkins reports. Several hundred people moved around the 17 caskets getting about 10:30 this morning. The viewing lasted over an hour. All of the victims were from two families the drip halls and the ramparts out round. Relatives agreed on today's joint funeral service. The funeral service was delayed three days to allow time for the husband and father of eight of the victims Beatrice Rampersad to travel from Guyana. He made. He almost didn't make it though. The problem was arranging for a visa even a temporary one to get him into the United States. For three days the State Department refused to issue a visa because eateries RAMmers out it had a run in with police in Guyana. Some 16 years ago. Finally Friday afternoon the visa was approved. But it took 72 hours straight hours of persistent pressure from the Hudson County Red Cross and from Congressman Frank. After the viewing period the formal
funeral service was held in another room. The caskets were to be removed this afternoon for cremation. All mortuary costs about thirty five hundred dollars are being covered by the Hudson County Red Cross. And today's arrangements were provided at no cost by the leavers slam funeral home. The final chapter next week when the families take their cremated remains back to Guyana. In the mean time the Hudson County Red Cross will continue to oversee the care and relocation of other families affected by the fire. In Union City. I'm talking. Covenant burn once the Carter administration to come up with federal aid to clean up mercury pollution in the Hackensack Madeline's. In a letter to Carter aide Stuart Eizenstat said the concentrations of mercury at one dumping site exceed levels found in mercury mines. Brown put a price tag of at least three million dollars on the cleanup.
Governor Brown will be going overseas to drum up business for New Jersey. It's being termed an investment mission to get foreign companies to locate in the state and to promote New Jersey businesses overseas. When we go in first of. Our interest to German companies and eventually have some additional German companies and US companies come back to locate. Here in New Jersey and second to trade with companies already doing business in New Jersey. Who are interested in developing their international trade I think is the fact that a number of New Jersey companies have not taken advantage of the international trade increase. Travel to Great Britain Germany and Switzerland with other state and business officials are not saying how much the trip will cost the taxpayer only that it's publicly and privately funded. Contributing reporter on the media Richard Nixon turns his attention to sports reporting tonight.
I don't know how you cope with Midwinter doldrums but I was recently dragged out of mine temporarily at least by the Pete Rose story. Since pepper Pete as a sports reporter might identify him. Decided ultimately to go with the Phillies I decided the best New Jersey newspaper to consult would be the courier post of Camden County. Sure enough during that decisive week the staff pulled all stops including a page one for color photographs of the free agent from Cincinnati Gov. Bernie sometimes a tennis player should be so lucky. About the same time this story was unfolding. Bob shear rock on but it's been for the Courier Post anticipated my annoyance with sports reporting when he wrote and I quote all the writer has to do is contact someone in authority get a disclaimer and go ahead and write the story even if it doesn't pan out. And most rumors stories never do of course. There is still a story there. No one else in the daily press has so much
copy generated on the basis of so little fact. I was reminded of my personal problem more recently when I read speculation in Central Jersey newspapers on the mysterious disappearance of Rodney Duncan from the Rutgers basketball lineup. Innocent. So I understand this much heralded young hoopster simply lost his job on the starting five in the rumor end of story. But sports writers have a penchant for speculating on events such as the Super Bowl til the cows come home. They were the revered place in American journalism. But it's one thing to criticize players and coaches who are professionals with high salaries and quite another to subject high school and college players and coaches. The speculation rumor and unnecessary criticism. This is Richard Nixon. State officials say that more than 100 foster homes are needed when New Jersey children as soon as possible. A state agency in South Jersey is trying to recruit foster parents for children of
all ages. But according to the agency the greatest need is among pre-adolescence. If the children cannot be placed in foster homes or have to go temporarily to state run shelters. Since the National Film Board of Canada production volcano an inquiry into the life and death of Malcolm low rate Malcolm But one of these people he said he had to choose the one or the other. Each shows he was completely consistent in a certain sense. He knew what he was about. From. Watch volcano on cinema showcased and I did not. Jersey Public Television. Is a daily drama taking place in Atlantic City. It's the struggle of the only casino operator in town fighting the state's charges that it has some indirect ties to organized
crime. Resorts International its old history the Casino Control Commission is hearing a detailed account of resorts casino operation in the Bahamas in the 1960s. The division of Gaming Enforcement claims the company paid off officials there. And this week the resort's president defended a special bond used for the payoffs. We were the biggest employer in the bar. We had the biggest. Feature in the Bahamas they say look to. Help provide. The type of services with. Which we in America think of us as normally do to to ourselves glories of the government or as employees of industry. And. We felt that we had a moral obligation to make and distribute. Some of the money that we had earned in the Bahamas. To provide for this gas. And. It was not in no way directed or intended.
To be. To buy any special treatment or to get any special favors or to circumvent any government regulation. The picture that Resorts is painting for the commission is that of a benevolent company whose officers were unaware of any contacts with unsavory characters. One peculiar character David Dubinsky had a contract with resorts not to say anything negative about the company. Earlier this month he was released from that contract. Now he's talking freely but not necessarily against resorts like this world. Stop saying what I want. There's nothing you know. You know otherwise. All my life I speak out. Tell It Like It Is. I don't care where water out. That's my reputation. That's why perhaps violate these people here. The resource people and other people. While there have been some moments of levity clearly the hearings are heating up resorts attorney Ray Brown during a break in the hearings flashed a rare moment of anger toward his
counterpart state's attorney Michael Brown. And the commission. Right you're right. Mind you when you walk with me like the way you want information do what you want everything to be or that I don't really feel that you know. Then you're not going to do it will. That's just a sample of what's been going on in Atlantic City this week and in fact for the last three weeks there's a parade of officials from the company to determine lawyers and the commission which will ultimately decide whether or not resorts gets a permanent casino license. Journalists have also been following the hearings. John McLaughlin is a contributing reporter for New Jersey nightly news and writes for The New York Daily News. Rita shade is on the New Jersey staff of the Philadelphia Bulletin. Greta you've been covering the hearings have we heard anything new so far. Well one thing according to what. Davis said that they were trying to get special
attention or. Special favors for anyone prevents he when he took the stand yesterday said. The situation was so bad when he came around the resorts couldn't even get a pass to get over the bridge from Paradise Island the mainland. That. The Bahamian government felt that Resorts was prejudiced. There was a talk about getting away from independent gambling casinos. And so I think we're going to see now prevent maybe painting a picture of resorts really trying to get their. Clutches. Into the into. You know. Officials and with the government down there. Well let's talk a little bit more about Prince he stands to gain more than a million dollars if resorts gets its casino license. John would you think that under those circumstances we're likely to hear very much from him. I would doubt very much that was a risk he would say anything critical about Resorts International I. Was very interested in Mr. Davis's testimony. I've heard a lot of people justify about. Giving money to politicians. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say that he did it because it was a moral
obligation. We also saw Ray Brown. He of course won the acquittal in the Dr Rex case and he's one of New Jersey's most famous trial lawyers. He's in there for resorts how much difference will he make. Mr. Pratt is a very very good lawyer. You know this is where we have. Had some reservations. When I first heard that. But. RAY BROWN We represent resorts in this because he's mainly. A very successful trial. You're not dealing with a trial you're here. With a jury I mean you're dealing with a commission. But he has not resorted to the kind of flamboyant style that you can go either way. One reason it's important for someone of the caliber of Ray Brown is that. The standards for running a commission hearing is not the same as a court it's not you're innocent until you're proven guilty. All the state has to do is make the allegation it's up to resorts. To show that they that they're not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt they're guilty until proven innocent then finally in a
hearing how successful is Ray Brown been so far in cutting down the state's charges. Well. I would say it's kind of you know the state has. The state pretty much has to bring in someone right now to call. Davis a liar and say you know you do have connections to organized crime. If he doesn't talk they don't have to get a Chilean on the. On the stand maybe. Is that going to happen. Oh I don't I wouldn't want to predict how we decide is going to him. But in terms of an overview. If the same standard of morality were applied to businesses doing. Business with Hudson County for example in 1966 when Resorts was doing business in the Bahamas. The entire economy in the USA would collapse. If. Resorts felt compelled to pay off politicians in the Bahamas to stay in business so that about one hundred fifty different businesses doing business with Hudson County Board of freeholders or anyone suggesting that they would be banned from doing business in the Jersey anymore but it is resorts that at the moment is
under scrutiny. And. Read how strong is the state's case against resorts. We won't know unless we find out whether preventive talks whether he really indeed has something a say or they get someone like a Giuliani on the stand. They've made some allegations that. They've they've been criticized for their allegations. Because much of the information was taken from all files. But now. Martinez who heads the division claims that he has evidence to back it up. And we haven't yet seen it though. Some quick predictions will resorts get its license. I think it well. Yeah I think it will too and for this reason. If they deny resorts along the license they will such a high standard that the next two guys in line. Bally International and she's world will have a very very difficult time qualifying for there was just so many. There's been a lot of talk. That the government is grandstanding just trying to make a case to get a lot of national publicity for John Dugan the attorney general and the governor who's going to be out of a job in two years
with a kind of a mystery guy sitting behind Joel Stearns and me in the hearing room a fellow name because there's Ralph weathers. He's. He runs the largest brokerage house in the Bahamas. He's from England and he's a major investor in. Resorts. And they're. Talking about maybe bringing him on to the stand and letting him say how all of this publicity is really damage the company and it's just grandstanding and we haven't been able to prove anything. Call the state's bluff. OK. When our time is up John McLaughlin of the New York Daily News Reader shade of the Bulletin. Thank you for being with us. The judge who presided at the Dr. X murder trial has dismissed 19 contempt of court citations against New York Times reporter Myron Farber. But the action by Judge William was really just a formality. Another Bourbon County judge had lifted the contempt charges only a half hour before. Dr. Mariano just tell of it was acquitted last October. Farber spent 40 days in jail for his refusal to turn over his files on the murder case.
Plans are underway for the construction of 11 regional schools for the severely handicapped. Education Commissioner Fred Burke says local districts can provide the programs that handicapped children need. He says the state will construct schools to provide adequate programs and facilities for about thirteen hundred children. Burke says it will cost about 20 million dollars to build the state owned facilities. The site will be announced in March and they should be completed by 1982. Recapping the news tonight a report says that two young children may have been responsible for last week's fire in Hoboken. Officials are asking for some federal relief from the flooding of the past week. Several communities are still suffering the effects of the rain. More is expected tomorrow.
